I think that EE is superb project and, unlike some, I feel it has a great future. To this end, I am posting a add-on that I've recently developed for my own use: the incorporation of GPS data into EE.

In the spirit with which Pekka developed EE - and, I hope, with his approval - I'm releasing the add-on under the GPL. (Pekka, if you have any concerns about this, please let me know and I will remove the files immediately.)

The zip file at http://www.tilebarn.com/ee-gps/index.htm contains all you need to install and use the add-on: changed and new EE files, a db upgrade script, an installer, an example image file and detailed installation and usage instructions, including screenshots.

With the GPS add-on, you can:

- Display GPS data in the photo details for each image,
- Allow visitors to click on the GPS data to display the image location in a map in a new browser window.
- Control the format used to display GPS locations
- Control the types of map displayed
- Work with different mapping service providers
- Edit GPS data on the standard photo editor and upload editor pages

If an image has no GPS data associated with it, EE behaves gracefully.

I've included utilities to allow for easy bulk updating of GPS data from existing images.

The GPS add-on assumes you're working with a clean install of EE 2.04. However, the new functionality is reasonably self-contained, so if you have a modified 2.04 installation, or are still using an earlier v2.xx installation, it should still work, albeit with perhaps a little massaging. But you'll need to perform a manual installation.

I hope you find the add-on useful.

Hello,

i tried but i can not get past the path error where it says that the URL /upgrade/upgrade does not exist. This appears after clicking the "install EE-gps" button...

But i would like to have your GPS update.... What to do?

@Uwe. Sorry you're having problems. It's been a while since I looked at this, as there doesn't seem to have been much interest in it.

Is your installation of EE completely standard? If so, the problem is likely to be a mistake on my part. If it's non standard, you will probably have to do a manual installation.

Even if your installation is standard, the quickest fix is probably going to be to do a manual install. It shouldn't be complicated: simply overwrite the existing files that I modified and copy the new ones. Then run the SQL script that makes the database changes. Back up everything first, of course.

There's a complete manifest of changed and new files in the user guide, as well as a line by line listing of all the code changes in the user guide.

HTH,

John

Thank's to the kind help of John i am now able to use GPS data in my photos... Great to see the geo coordinates just below each photo together with the otehr photo data... just one click on the coordiantes opens up a satelite view of the aera the photo was taken.

Nice !

Still, it is sad to realise that EE is not in any visible progress of development anymore. GPS data is only one of the features EE could build upon to be a formidable competitior to other gallerie applications...
