do you guys store your cameras gear in the hotel vault during vacation?

Would the hotel accept camera for storage in its vault?

What's the point of taking your camera if you going to leave it with someone else for safe keeping?

First of all, I use my camera when traveling, so no. Second, even if I was on a trip and definitely not going to use the camera, I still wouldn't leave it there. If it was absolutely necessary for you to leave the equipment in the hotel, at least take your CF cards with you so you'd have all your pictures if anything were to happen to the camera.

Uh, I think I would take my camera WITH me when I left the hotel room. Isn't that why you brought the camera along?

I might want to take skinny dip in the ocean. I want my camera to be kept safe from keen eyed thieves.

Lock camera up and take memory cards with you.

It sits in a pelican case . . .unlocked and vulnerable! It is with me as often as its not - but you are correct that it is ripe for the pickings!

Uhmm not all events calls for a camera presence?

Unless you want to look like idiot carrying around that 'gripped' camera of yours. Then by all means, be my guest.

Only my cards with my images on them if I'm going out without the cameras (room safe). The equipment is insured and can be replaced. The images can't be replaced.

I dont use the hotel vault. But I will use the in room safe on ocassion. But usually only for the body and the 70-200. Everythig else sits in a drawer in the bag.

I just leave it in my hotel room, inside the bag and I have been all over Europe, Asia but not United States, I'm US Citizen living overseas and had no problem. Even in Italy I leave my camera gear in my hotel room and never had an issue. It seems that so many people think here that the rest of the world is going to steal your precious equipment is beyond me. Get an insurance and although common sense is free, make a note to use it.

I leave everything in the room in the camera case. Was on a cruise a few weeks ago and never locked up anything.

I like the idea of putting the CF cards in a different place so as not to loose the photos. I might stick the 70-200 f/2.8 IS in the safe the next time we travel and then again I may not worry about it.

I know things have been taken from hotel/motel rooms but I have never had a problem.

I wouldn't worry about it any more than theft at any other time.

The chances are remote (unless you are stupid or in a crime blackspot). Insure the gear and take reasonable precautions (lock the room door etc). If it gets stolen either the hotel is liable or the insurance pays!

I do like the idea of taking the CF cards though - more for personal reassurance than anything else.

When we went to Antigua I did use the Hotel safe. They even gave me the only key to it! I was shocked! She told me if I lost that key they would have a big issue. I took a bunch of lenses with me, so I just swapped them out as needed. Worked out great! It was at thr Sandals by the way.

I am going to Hawaii this winter and plan to keep my gear in the hotel when I dont have it with me (such as swimming, other activities in which the camera would be a burden to carry). Not much else to do. I have it insured though, but good idea on stashing the CF cards elsewhere.

I've done a ton of traveling and never had any issues leaving the gear in my room. Of course when you are out you are bound to have your camera with you but I traveled for work and then went out after hours to do some local shooting, I couldn't drag all that stuff into the office so it sat in the hotel. I am fully insured and everyone should be to get that peace of mind. I try not to leave it open to prying eyes when I am not there to protect it but even on the occasions that I did everything was fine. I have used the in room safe to store my cards like has been mentioned here.

When I was on a job & didn't have it on me, I usually had it in the trunk. But for big jobs where we had 8X10 & 2-1/4 plus other cases of stuff, I always had the manager lock it up somewhere when I couldn't take it with us. Exposed film was always shipped out for processing, in separate packages, the same day, but that's another story.
On vacation & for editorial jobs, I only took the 20mm, 50mm, & 105mm, & two bodies, so it never left my side. get a decent travel bag that locks, i put my gear inside and lock it... And hope they don't think to take the whole thing? ;)

When I was in Jamaica a few months ago, I made sure that I would at least have a room safe available. On times I was going swimming or snorkeling, the DSLR (and lenses) went into the safe, and the waterproof P&S went with me.

I have traveled with my gear in Europe, Africa, the Middle East and South East Asia. The only thing I really worry about is the (full) cards.

Some of the hotels I've been in I wouldn't trust them with my shoes let alone thousands in gear....

I usually carry all my gear with me since everything fits in one shoulder bag. The only time I've left some gear (usually an extra lens) in a hotel was in Japan. I guess I trust the staff in a Japanese hotel much more than the staff in the USA.

Things do get stolen...

I have had a ring stolen from my briefcase inside my locked room; it could have been hotel staff who did it in the 1-2 hrs I was out of the room.
Many travelers have had things stolen during stays in hostels when they go down the hall to the bathroom/shower.

It does not always make sense to have your camera...

I do go out after dark, when a camera might make little sense at my destination
I have taken scuba lessons during the day and do not have an underwater housing, or if I am windsurfing it makes no sense to bring along the camera
a big dSLR on a roller coaster ride which does 360 degree barrel rolls?!?!
a big dSLR while you are relaxed with eyes closed at a mud bath?!

The in-room safe has been used by me in such situations. And if no in-room safe, the camera is locked in a hardsided suitcase that is chained to an immovable object in the room. The camera goes with me for all other situations.

I was in Turkey earlier this year.

After many weeks hauling my gear everywhere, I jumped at the opportunity to use the room safe in a small hostel I had checked into.

My plan was to store most of my gear, passports, credit cards etc and finally have a day of traveling light.

I put all the valuables in, locked it up, then checked the door to make sure it was secure...and the whole safe moved!!

The thing was not bolted to the floor and was not very heavy - someone could have easily picked the whole safe up and carried it away to force open at their leisure.

Needless to say, I got all my gear out, packed it back into my backpack, and had another day of carting everything everywhere .
