My son is getting married this weekend. I thought I'd give taking photos of their rings a try.

Very nice shots.
Isn't it funny though how the colour temperature can completely change the appearance of diamonds? In the second, the ring looks almost muddy compared to the brilliance of the first. So for impact, the first is the winner for me. However, I do love the line of text that you caught in the second! Decisions, decisions...
Thanks for posting,
Ken.

Nice work. I feel that the narrow DoF has worked well for #2 but would like more DoF in #1. Just my $0.02 :)

I think #2 is too warm WB-wise.

Ring shots are about processing and light source/angle (besides composition understanding).
This is what one large side light can do for you (imagine what you could do with more complex lights):

Thanks for all the input guys. Taking these photos was a little more challenging then I expected (angles, DOF, lighting, WB), but it was fun.

What type of lenses do you use to get these shots? I can never get any of my lenses to focus that closely on something. Any advice? I've got two weddings coming up!

5d Mk II with a Canon 100mm 2.8 macro lens mounted on a tripod using manual focus, in doors, no flash.

Very nice. The composition seems off on the second one; I'd play around a little more arranging the scene so you see more text and the rings are not so centered. Really like #1.
