The latest contest is now under way and the title is:
"Advertising".
Pick any object and sell it with your photo. Make it look sexy, sassy, sweet, or scrumptious.
Perhaps a can of beer or a bar of chocolate. Be as creative as you like!
Thanks to RigRider for providing the title
Please make sure you have read and understood all the rules before submitting your photos.
If you haven't already done so, please click here (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=89412) and take the time to vote for your favorite photo from the last contest.
Remember, everyone is welcome to join in. You don't need to be an expert or to have a fancy camera, this is all just about having fun and, through that, getting better at photography.
Just please make sure you've read all the rules before sending in your pictures.
As per usual, you may submit up to two photos for this competition.
Good luck everyone! http://www.photography-on-the.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif

Anyone can enter this contest. It is not so much we have these in the spirit of competition, rather we have these contests to challenge ourselves and to give ourselves motivation to take pictures that we might otherwise not do. And in turn learn and grow.
RULES
1) The contest will run for two weeks and will end on Tuesday 22nd August, 2005 at 8:00AM GMT.
2) You can submit up to two pictures, and change these if you wish up to the time that the competition ends.
3) Post processing - nothing that substantially changes the original composition of the image.
4) Photos must be no larger than 800 pixels at the longest dimension. Also, please try and keep the filesize down to under 200k if possible to make viewing the gallery easier for modem users.
5) No framing of pictures, text or copyright notices.
6) This competition is a learning experience so we ask you, where possible, to take photos espeically for the contest. Older photos may be submitted, provided they have not previously been displayed on POTN Forums.
7) At the end of the competition, a separate thread will be started to seek the votes of forum members over the period of 1 week. The person with the most votes will be declared the winner.
 The winner will be recorded in the Hall of Fame (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=84118)
Commenting on photos before the voting closes:
You can comment on any photo in this competition, provided it does not have an asterix (*) next to the title.
I'll assume that everyone is happy for people to comment on their photos.
If you do not wish to have your photo commented on, just drop me an email/pm and I'll add an asterix to the title of your photo.
Note: The POTN Photographer of the Year contests are entirely separate from this one, so different rules apply.
Please be patient with me if it takes one or two days for me to get submissions posted.
Finally, please ensure that you have read this post fully and understand the rules prior to sending.

The first photo is online.
For anyone who isn't aware, the title of the photo is the tag line for a popular mobile phone advert in the UK.

"The future's bright, the future's orange" is (or was?) the tagline for a german mobile phone company called Orange.

Another photos online. Isn't it interesting the way that different people are interpreting the subject?
Some people are interpreting it as product photography, while others seem on the verge of running their own ad campaign!
Of the former type, my favourite so far is "Form meets function". It's beautifully done! Of the latter type, "The future's bright, the future's orange" is my fav. It's quite unusual, and I didn't think I'd like it, but it is slowly growing on me. I think I could really see that image on billboards or in a cinema.
That's not to discount the others though. Bright brew is also beautifully done. Having the pine trees in the distance is a great touch!
What do others think?
Good work everyone, keep them coming :D

In this contest how much photoshop work is allowed?
Until now I would only do some cropping. A photo like "future is orange" was over the limits of postprocessing in my opinion.

Rense, good to hear from you again. Unfortunately, there is no easy answer to that question as it is ultimately a subjective judgement.
In my opinion, selective desaturation does not materially affect the composition of the photo (rule 3), so I allowed it. However, more importantly, the competitions are designed as a fun exercise so, as far as possible, I try to allow all the photos that are submitted.
I have turned down about 4 photos since I started running the competitions and perhaps it helps to know what these were. I have turned down some photos were a person from one photo was imposed on the background of another. I have also turned down photos that were multiple exposures PS-d together.
Ultimately I would like everyone to be able to share their photos and I try to allow this as far as possible.
On a more cheerful note, which photo was your favourite?

Big_B,
Thanks for making this clear. I now understand more fully the meaning of rule 3.
My favourite is form meets function, but I hope to see more photo's soon.

Maserati is very cool. It's obvious the photographer put an effort in the composition and lighting. Good work (insert a thumb up here).
"Form meets Function" that's a beauty!
Note: please drop the name on the photo.

Ok Sam, let's open up things here
Why don't we know who the photographers are.
Of course, subject to their approval.

I was also concerned about too much post processing. I intentionally shot the Maserati photo with the reflection of the lights on the hood, which is what I submitted. Later I removed all the lighting reflections from the phot and I think it looked better with no reflections, but in the spirit of the rules I didn't want to have it rejected , so I went ahead and submitted the original..
p.s. thanks for the kind words on the photo. The customer was picking the car up soon after it came in, so I only had a few minutes to work with it..
p.s.s. I agree with dropping the name on the photos.

Fotopic adds them all on their own accord. I've fiddled with the options and I think they are now turned off, but it says that it may take 24 hrs for them to take effect.

Ok Sam, let's open up things here
Why don't we know who the photographers are.
Of course, subject to their approval.
The reason is because we don't want this to become a popularity contest. There are many new members to this board who submit photos and I think they would be in danger of being overlooked if they were faced with some of the more well-known figures.
The competition is about the photo, not the photographer so I don't see the need to know who they are - in the first instance anyway. That said, we could relax the rules, so that the photographers could make themselves know by posting additional comments about the photo. In particular, they might want to respond to comments made about their photos. e.g. If I said I didn't like photo x because of y, the photographer could come back and say, well y was done because....

.
If you are ever unsure, you are welcome to send me both copies and ask for an opinion. Personally I think the reflections make the picture, but then I haven't seen the alternative version. However, I think it would have worked better if it had been taken from a slightly wider angle. Tight is good, but this photo is so tight in that it makes me feel slighly claustrophobic! :)

Big_B,
Regarding the contest, does it have to be an object? Advertising is a WIDE field. Just curious. And even if it's an object/product, does the product have to be displayed in the photograph?

I noticed that the red floppy disk in the picture of the Commodore drive ("Sexy Old Tech") has been "notched" to allow using BOTH sides! Went all the way to 360k with that modification, didn't they?

I think a wide interpretation is fine, however it might be worth including some text with your photo if the advertising concept/object isn't very obvious.

IMO, that's a myth. When it comes to voting people vote to photos that they really like. Let's take you Sam as an example. I for one highly appreciate the efforts you are putting in the contests you are managing. Yet, I will not vote for your pic if I didn't like it. I'm sure other people think that way and vote honestly.

Alright, but perhaps it's better to look at the issue a little differently. How do you benefit from knowing that it was me that took the photograph?

Nobody benefit from anything. It's the idea that people can exchange their opinions on photos what makes a contest lively.
Just see how many comments the "Maserati" photo got. Yes, it's a beautiful photo, but also the owner of the pic came forward and talked about his/her photo.
I don't understand why the secrecy of this contest. I really don't.

10 more photos online :) Some really great ones in this batch. I think my favourites out of the latest lot are:
Quality contrast - I love the classic style.
Firy breath, try cool mint - cracked me up!
One thing I've noticed is that some of the pictures are appearing very small. I'm going to investigate why that is happening, but in the mean time just click on the small picture for a full-sized version.
I'm off for the weekend now, so will report back on monday. Also a final reminder that the deadline for this competition is first thing monday morning, so be sure to email your photos in over the weekend if you want them to be included.
