I have a few questions about using the flash and I could not find an online guide.

I am worried about getting the correct exposure. I have been reading up on all the possible settings and it is really confusing. I will use a tri-pod with the flash attached to the Shoe Cord 2. The subjects will be approx. 15 feet away in a dimmly lit room. Not sure what to set the camera settings at.

I would also like to use the remote capture software and am wondering if this will work with the external flash?

I am also wondering about post processing and printing on the Canon i950, and I have never used ICC Profiles before, but first I need to get thru the shoot.

I greatly appreciate ANY advice and help that you could provide me with!!!

Thank You!!!

There should be no problem with the automatic exposure control in the environment you describe. You might even want to aim the flash at a nearby white wall or ceiling at an angle that will reflect the light at your subject. I would put the camera mode selector dial on the "P" setting.

If you find that your exposures aren't quite right, push the middle of the three buttons (to the right of the LCD Monitor) four times. You should see a little symbol on either display that has a lightning bolt (flash) and a +/-. This is the flash exposure compensation screen. You can press the (on the 4-way cursor button) to increase or decrease the exposure, in 1/3 stop steps.

To cancel any adjustment you made, access the same screen and use the to set the cursor in the middle or the range.

All this is described on page 74 of your User Guide manual.

If your camera has trouble focussing (which it might in really low light situations), put something shiny into the center of the subject area to give the camera something to "see" to focus on. You could even use a flashlight to illuminate the proper area of the subject, then hold the shutter button down halfway to acquire focus, then turn off the flashlight and press the shutter button the rest of the way. Another option is to use the manual focus mode (see page 81 in the User Guide manual).

I too just got a 420ex. In Program Mode, the settings are always 1/60 sec and F2 with the Flash adjusting light output. The exposure is very good but I want greater depth of field than F2 provides. I've tried Av mode at F5.6 and 1/60 and also got a good exposure. What is your 'normal' or favortie set-up for using the 420ex?

I just got the 420EX last week and have not used it yet. I will be using it later this week though.
