Hi,

I want to do some macro photography with my D60.
The lenses i use now are :
sigma 15-30
canon 28-135 IS
canon 70-200L/2.8 IS

What do you think about the 500D on my 70-200L/2.8IS
Is it possible to use it handheld with the IS?
Is the 100/2.8 macro much better?
How about DOF with 100/2.8 macro compared with 70-200 and 500D ?
Anyone used these combinations?

You see, a lot of questions, any help?

Thanks,

Gert

Look Gert, first I need to apologise as I don't know about macro and the D60. I just want to know what you think about the lenses you list. They sound like the kind of set that I would like to get and the 28-135 IS is likely to be the first one.

I've just ordered the 10D and am really nervous about it. My first DSLR and the same price as say, a better holiday than I've ever had! Anyway, I'm rambling, Lens selection is trickier than the camera and any advice you can give would be great.

Thanks

Martin

Hi Martin,

First i have to say that it all depends on what you want to shoot and how much you want to spend of course.
The canon L's are the best but you need to spend a lot of money.

About the lenzes i have right now:
I wanted to have a good set at fair price but with a good tele zoom.
So i took the 70-200L/2.8 IS wich is a wonderfull lens but heavy and expensive.

For a walkaround lens and medium zoom the 28-135IS.
Not the quality of an L but ok for me.

I didn't want to spend a lot of money on a wide angle so i took the sigma 15-30. It's a bit noisy but for the rest ok in my opinion. Now you can go for the canon 17-40L, it is a litlle more expensive.

the next on my wich list is a macro and a low light prime, probably the 50/1.4

Gert,

The 500D works fine on the 70-200. The dandelion in this gallery http://www.rogercavanagh.com/galleries/flowers1/index.htm was taken with this combo.

You can handhold, but really the hit-rate is not very good because DOF is so small that it's much better to use a tripod.

Can't comment on the performance of the 100 macro as I've never used it, but DOF will be not different as it is a function of magnification. DOF at 0.5x, or 1x is the same whatever lens you are using.

It's cheaper to buy the 500D than the 100 macro, I guess. :)
