In my Best Dr. Evil voice "LASERS" - Don't hump the laser
Well as for the photos from the vent, it was a fun evening with the colorful lights providing a good subject, but always a tricky one. I had fun using my ST-E2 and 580EX combo in some of the DJ and people shots.
This was at a club called "the Works" in Detroit, MI. The headliners was Breakloose Detroit proudly presents a very special guest: Simply Jeff (Dj Culture, Phonomental, XM Radio, BPM Magazine), plus other local DJ's.
Hope you enjoy. I shoot every weekend almost, and am getting more work, all the time, but I found these photos fun and different. So I thought I would share. Any feedback is welcomed.

Eric, utterly superb ... particularly from the website. I'm curious as to how you used your flash off camera ... did you have someone hold it? One 580EX? The girls are MUCH better looking than the guys! I notice a lot of the dancing is done with very flat hands used in gestures ... I don't see that at my venues, but we know my venues are different than "clubs!" Love the colors, crispness, people paying attention to you and cooperating, the use of blur. Seems a lot shot with a very wide angle? Seems like a LOT of different guys wearing the headphones ... are they all DJs? Why so many? And a California question: can they smoke in there? I see butts on the floor and cigarette packs, but no actual smoking and it doesn't look smokey from your pictures.
Again, I am really impressed by these ... you've really developed a great technique. Love to have you share it over in the Q&A!

Thanks for the compliments Dwight and Qausiphoto,
And from Dwight espcially, your shots are inspiring also. So clear, close, but good lighting makes a huge difference.

Actually, I set it down on speakers, or in the DJ booth if possible, used the reflector card, and in bounce flash. I sometimes even hold it with one hand and the camera with the other, but that is tough to get a clear shot without camera shake. I am still working on my technique with this, but i found it

Yeah I have been using the wide angle 10-22 more latley, but I like the results and it is godo for very close up shots when I don't have much room to work with. I usually only take two lenses with me, the 10-22, and my Canon 28-105. the 28-105 is not a high ened lens, but it is very versatile as far as length, and i don't run the risk of breaking a $1500 lens if someone bumps into me. I have tried the 70-200 IS, it is too big to carry though a club, and scares people. Yes people can smoke in clubs , but it is never that bad. Some places are worse than others, but editng in PS can help clear some of the haze and smoke. ;)
As far as the numerous peopel with headphones on yes they are all DJ's. Usually an event has 2-3 DJ's with one of them being the headliner, thats travels the US and worldwide and that is there full time gig, and the others are local DJ's, that are up and coming. Then you throw in a multiple room venue, with a span of 6 hours 10pm - 4am , and you could easily have 5-10 different DJ's playing.
I would love to share my thoughts, techniques, and experiences in the Q&A section, but it will have to be in a few weeks as I am really busy with events and also in the middle of looking at and purchasing a house. I have a big event coming up next weekend, it is a benefit concert for five charities, with an attendance of over 3000 people. I will get to use my 70-200IS for this.
Here is a cool photo, from last night. It is the silouette of the DJ. No Flash, hand held, 1/30 sec, f5, and ISO 1600. A little soft, but thats due the combo of EXIF used.
I look forward to sharing more info in the future
