Canon EOS 10D gives error 99 some times every few shots some times not for 500 shots. Turning the camera off and on is the only way to clear the error but it comes right back. Changing drives, cards, batteries don't effect the frequency of the problem. At first it seemed to only occur with a Canon ef55-200 (purchased new at the same time), but it just came up with the Canon ef 35-80 as well. So far it's never occured with the Canon ef50. All the lenses work with no problem on my old D30.

The problem is intermitant but shows up more frequently when photographing ceilings, sky, or down at the ground. Turning off auto rotation does not effect the problem.

Any ideas? Anyone else get the error?

I experienced an Error 99 on my Canon 1Ds. The manual suggested removing the battery and re-inserting it. I have not has a problem since.

Good luck!

removing battery doesn't change the problem. neather does using another battery or even adding the battery pack with two batteries. doesn't seem to be related to the battery.

That is in the instruction manual for the D60. It is likely to be the same for 10D.

"Err 99 Either turn off the main switch and turn it on again or remove and reinsert the battery pack."

"If a camera error occurs, 'Err xx' will be displayed on the LCD panel."

"If the same error occurs often, something is probably wrong with the camera. Jot down the 'xx' error code and take your camera to the nearest Canon Service Center."

I got the same problem, but only with a Sigma 100mm f2.8 macro lens. All other lenses shot OK, so far.

Could it be older electronics in the lenses?

Thats exactly what i was told. the shop said it was a communication problem between camera and lens.
either send lens back to be re-chipped, or, just ignore it.

I think my 50mm macro (with the 1.6 multiplier of the 10D) will cover most of what I needed from the 100MM macro with my film bodies.

I'll put the old lens in with film camera cabinet.

I appreciate the teamwork in finding the solution (or at least identifying the problem).

BTW, how would one get a lens rechipped? Is it expensive?

I have the same problem nearly constant with the Sigma 2.8/28-70, but sometimes it is working. Very humoristic thing, when i target to the ground, it is working sometimes more often. It is no chance to work with, now i am talking with the support from Sigma, but i think, the german service is not really informed and gives me wrong answers.
The error comes sometimes with my Original Canon 1.8/50 Objective. Not very often, but i think every 10 times i power on the camera, it appears for two times and after this, its working correctly.
No problems at this time, i have with my Canon 100-300.
Very mystyrious, i think that a firmwareupdate will help.
Also a firmwareupgrade has to come from Sigma for all their Objectives if they want to sell some in future. It seems, that no other has these problems.
