Hi
I am new to digital photography. I bought the G1, use it extensively when I was away on hoilday.
I was told by my friend that I should not wipe the lens of the camera.
However, I notice my lens is a bit stain. Can I wipe it?
Pls advise
Many thanks in advance for the answer.

I use a Lens Pen or a piece of microfiber cloth all the time to clean my lens and notice no degradation of the coating. Just brush or blow off any dust or grit on the lens before you polish it with cloth or tissue or whatever.

Right on answer. A good lenscloth (that's what they are made for) will never scratch or degrade even the cheapest lens. It is the contaminants on the lens that get wiped around that do the damage.
Notice I said cheapest- the G series ain't cheap so the coating is much better than the plastic variety fixed lens. Just be careful; wipe, not scrub; remove as much contamination as possible before you start; your lens will far outlast your camera. Digital especially.
