I have a 40D. I enjoy it and it has been a great teaching tool. I have been wanting to get a mark 2 after using one and seeing the results. My problem is what could be around the corner. What should I do? I can deal with the wait, but I don't know how long or what I will be waiting for. Opinions?

If the MKIII had been announced, or even there was an announcement about a future announcement then you might have a reason to wait. Buy it and be happy.

Buy the mk2. When the mk3 comes out, buy it to replace your 40d.

dont bother waiting for the mk3 , wait for the mk4. no the mk 5
mk6 mk7. you could go on for ever
i was in the same boat a few weeks ago
get a 7d or save a bit longer and get a 5dmk11. or wait even longer and get 8d or 5d mk3
you know what i did
i got a 2nd hand 5d mk1 classic. mint condition looks like it as never been used
and picked it up for Ģ495 ( $730) and im chuffed to bits with it. the quality is superb.
keep putting it off and wondering "what if" will break you. it will send you round the bend.
a 5dmk11 was up for sale yesterday on another uk camera forum Ģ1300. had i not just bought the mk1and lens i would have snatched it up. so keep a look at the classifieds .
i dropped on with the mk1 and the above mk11 was a steal. maybe you will get lucky
DON'T PROCRASTINATE

You're going to be waiting for a long time if you're holding out for the mkIII. What exactly is the mkII missing that you need? You'll get full frame, awesome low light performance, more megapixels than you'll know what to do with, micro-adjustments, HD video, and probably more. When the 5D mkIII comes out I'm sure it'll be better in the low light department, maybe have higher megapixels, and maybe a few more minor improvements, but I don't see anything major coming from it. Go for the mkII.

even if the 5dmk3 comes out, the 5dmk2 will still be quite capable to produce beautiful images at the hands of those who possesses the skill for it. If you have the money today , if you want to live today , buy it , you never know what tomorrow has in store for you.

well said
like i said, ive just bought a 2nd hand 5yr old model in the 5d classic
and the difference between my 350d and 30 was a massive upgrade, and thats on so called old technology , and going off the quality of the body i bought and going off the seller saying the shutter had only done over 1000 clicks, im sure this camera will give me many years of good use

I find it silly when people ask the same question, by now that i'm in a position to afford a nice body I want to make sure I make the right choice.

Personally, I'm thinking of waiting on the 5DIII, then buying a 5DII when the prices tumble.

joking apart i couldnt agree more.
there are loads of 7d or 5d threads on here
but anyone in a position to buy one, always wants to start there own thread, rather than share someone elses
2 things i was worried about when going full frame
lack of onboard flash, and loosing crop factor
ive cropped on pc and pics seems as sharp if not sharper than crop body, and with the mk11 pixels you should be able to crop even more.

I'd say the 5dmk3 won't come out at least a year later. I'd say but the 5dmk2 now and be happy with it. I thought the same as you, then bought the 5dmk2 and enjoying it very much.

I made the move from the 40D to the 5mk2 a few months ago. I didnt regret it! I also had to deal with your dilemma, but now, Im very happy, that I went for it! I use it with the 17-40 and the 24-105. Its a wonderful combination. Make the move! You will be happy! Why wait for the mk3? It wasnt even announced! There are only speculations about it!

My pictures made with the 5dmk2 are making me very happy, and even a mk3 would come out, those pictures are taken, and they are making my photography "shine!" Good luck!

Same dilemma here. I went ahead with the 5DII and I'm very happy with it.

Wait for a 5D version that can focus.

For decades all the photographers were using manual focus lenses/cameras and they were happy with them.

Why not ask sport shooters these days to use manual focus...see if they agree with you.

1. 5D Mk. II is not a camera for sport photographers. If you want to shoot sports, buy 7D or 1D
2. I successfully use 40D and I donīt think that 5D Mk. II can be worse
3. The best photographers would be able to do it.

The 5D2 is only hafway through a 4 year product cycle.

You've a long wait :D

It focuses fine btw, just not lightening fast, it's not for animals and motorsports.

I mostly agree with the fact that procastrinating is of no use. Just go out and get it but I would suggest getting a 7D if you must have it now OR wait for 5d MkXX only for one reason...the new Auto focus which is in 7D will definitely be part of the new 5D Mkxx version. And i am sure I am stirring up hornets nest but this is my opinion.

There you go....5D III (7D body + FF sensor)...just like what I've advised OP to wait for.

"3. The best photographers would be able to do it."

It's like having a root canal without anesthesia, it can be done but it's "slightly" out of comfort .

I was in a similar situation a little while back, I know most people will say just buy the MkII since there is no news about the MkIII yet, but I tend to prefer buying bodies when they are fairly new, versus when they are in the middle or end of their cycle, just because it let's me have the latest and greatest for the longest time without feeling like I need to upgrade again. The AF on the 7D is a huge improvement, and I would like to see that carry over to the MkIII, as well as the other minor tweaks that have been made.

Personally if you don't feel like you are missing out and are happy for the time being with your current camera, I would wait, especially when you are spending this much on a body.

I donīt advise anyone to wait, unless you want to wait for something that has already been announced/released but is not in stock yet.

In one week thereīs a Formula 1 Grand Prix in Hungary. Which camera will be more suitable to capture this event? 5D Mk. II or 5D Mk. III?

D700.

OK, so donīt wait for anything and buy a D700.
Even the worst real camera is able to take better photos than the best imaginary camera.

If you want new body by all means upgrade now, there is no reason to wait imho. If the 5D mark III had been announced I might consider waiting, as long as I had enough new toys in the meantime :)

Consider the 7D and the 5D2 if that is your price bracket, each has its own advantages. You might also consider a used 1D body as they can be in a similar price bracket also (something like the 1D mark III).

I was having trouble deciding myself..speed or full frame? So I decided to get both. Two different beast. 5D MII and 7D, just awesome combination! :)

The D700 is hardly the worst, as I objectively compare bodies for my potential upgrade next year I see Canon wanting me to either buy 2 bodies to get good AF, a high fps rate and FF sensor (5D & 7D) or shell out 5Gs for their interpretation of both (MKIV). Personally, I won't be lugging around 2 bodies unless I'm getting paid. I see Nikon at least trying to give me a good compromise in the D700 if I'm willing to deal with slightly more expensive glass and not as many primes. I've never owned a camera without Canon stamped on it, and I'd like that to continue, but Canon needs to step it up.

I have a 5Dmk2, I love the 5D mk2 I am constantly impressed by this camera, if you wondering get the 5D mk2 use it, love it's perfomance. No matter when you buy a new camera there will always be something new around the corner you just have to get used to the fact that with the ever faster march of technology you will never have the ultimate product just get the best you can now and enjoy! ;-)

I'm in the same boat with a 40d. I really need/want better auto focus and iso performance. I get only half of that with a 5d11 . Personaly its hard for me to justify the cost . I'm waitting to see what comes out in september . I hear Nikon has d700 replacement to be out soon also . Just sayin......

do you really in-need of the 5d2?? just look up for a good 5d1 body, and get better lens... I see awesome photos from xsi. 40d isn't any good to you know?? I mean I just shoot a business event with it and it come out great.

i mean after you get a 5d2 or wait for 3, are you gonna do 1d5 or 1d6?? just buy what on the market right now and use it well. technology changes every day now...are you able to keep up with it??

I was playing this game...updating from a 30D. I went with the 5D II. I decided to buy for future skill and L glass to match. I'm not into sport/action shooting and a full-frame was calling my name more. I still wonder about the 7D, but who doesn't second guess a purchase over a couple under bucks, let alone a couple thousand. :) I'm more than happy with my decision by the way.

I thought of waiting until Photokina, but really...even a 60D, if it will exist, won't be FF.
