...... or might do soon !

I can not get my PC to recognise that I have a 1D connected to the machine. I've installed the software twice but no joy !

When I switch the camera off, it throws up a warning so I know the firewire cable link is fine but how do I sort this out ? I've tried PS7, Downloader, Breezebrowser and they all fail to connect !

Anyone got any ideas ?

NB: I have D30 software/drivers on board as I'm still using the camera ...... could this be the problem ?

Basic Troubleshooting:

Eliminate all sources of potential problems and rebuild one step at a time.

If you think your previous drivers could be a problem, remove them along with the 1D drivers.

Reboot.

Reinstall 1D drivers and try again.

Also look for the latest patches / driver updates for all your components.

Good luck

Win98 doesn't work with firewire
Win98SE works bad with firewire

Win2000 / WinXP works fine with firewire

You cannot use salad oil for a Maserati. Try premium fuel.

Theoretically, theoretically ....

I did much with Win98SE and firewire - it always was a fight. Some soft wanted Texas, some soft wanted Microsoft .. arrrgghh.

Since long time using Win2000 - four computers connected via firewire network, external firewire 100gb hd, external Firewire dvd writer, camcorder .... all works fine!

Printer, scanner, card readers ... connected with USB1/USB2

I would be inclined to agree. I haven't worked with firewire, but generally speaking W2K is much more stable and enjoyable than Win98. I have had W2k on my laptop for 3 years now, 8-10 hours of use everyday and never once had a crash or a problem.

Yes, use WinXP or Win2000 for good USB/USB2/Firewire support.

Well look at this way, Win98 is now 5 years old and in the computer industry that is a very long time.

I've had the same problem initially with my 1D not working with the software in Win98SE. Although Win98SE detected the device fine. I've found out that you need to download a driver/patch file from Microsoft that will fix the firewire issue.
In the Twain driver folder (after you install the software for the 1D), there is a readme file. The file to download is there for Win98SE users.
Mine's working fine now.

I had this same problem and found the answer as did the above user. All the info is in this link http://photography-on-the.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6961#29975
