Hi Everyone,
It looks like there might be a chance of a shuttle landing at Edward's Air Base in California, but according to their website, the base will not be open to the public for the shuttle landing.
Does anyone know a good place that is open to the public around the area?
There might not be another opportunity in the future.
Thanks!
Emil

In the old days, the Shuttle used to come in across the Pacific, cross the coast, and then make its big turn just north of Edwards. Then it would land going south. Everybody used to sit out on the highway north of Edwards, and the Shuttle came in over their heads, but still quite high. The actual touch-down spot is deep within Edwards, and you won't get close to that.
There would be fifty RVs parked along the highway, partying and waiting and watching.

Bob,
Looking at the map from Google, it looks like you're talking about highway 58.
Thanks for the tip!!

cool, we just check the exif data and see what model camera they are using :)
there is one thing I would love to see before the shuttle never flys again and that to see a launch.

I think it's Kodak something.

I do remember seeing a picture from NASA about 3-4 years ago, before DSLRs become common of someone holding a Nikon film Camera.
Some how I don't think that Nasa cares about what model the camera is, as long as they get the shot. And from what I have seen, I don't care either.

Seeing a launch is awesome !
But, unless you're a VIP, you will be stuck several miles away from the Pad.
Blame 9/11. We (the public) used to be able to get seats at less than 2 miles away, now minimum is about 7 miles, and you can't see the pad.

Many years ago (about 23) I got a chance to the the Columbia come in to Edward's Air Force Base. You could hear it long before you could see it but you got a really good view of it. Back then, you could line up chairs outside the base along the chain link fence. It was an awesome sight!

I have the National Geographic ORBIT book - all hand held pics taken by astronauts - fantastic - including one of a 4 second (yes 4 second) hand held pan of New York at night.
I think all their kit is Hasselblad..

Discovery is home, thank God. The last landing I watched, it didn't make it. They're home today.
