I finally got my first shot of a dragonfly. I traced this guy around for a good 10 minutes before I can get a few shots.

Nice work getting the background here OOF and keeping the majority of the dragonfly in sharp focus, I am not familiar with a species like this one though I have seen some pretty dark ones some even with black tails but they also have some black in their wings, I was going to guess it to be a slaty skimmer but they are dark but not black more a of slate gray so somewhat a dusty dark blue.

Thanks for your continuous encouragement. Yeh, this is the first time I saw a black dragonfly, and I actually found that pretty (I usually like colors). Thanks again!

Eric, thanks for your kind words, as well as the info. I actually did some search on the web and found that it might be a Black Meadowhawk, as evidenced by the shape of the body and the black spot on each wing. The only thing I was NOT sure was the body of a Black Meadowhawk appears to be more shinny. Anyway, here is the link:

Yes I think you have the correct id on it, I was looking in my book and online but your online image was a little dark but I have to agree now that your photos sure look like it, Just because I haven't seen one in our area but that doesn't mean they do not exsist :)

Hello all,
I find myself here after seeing what I believe to be was a black dragonfly in my back yard here in England yesterday. I promise you it is not a sight I have ever seen before or would expect to see again. It was about 4 inches long.....can that be right? And flew very fast. My daughter and I ran in fear, smashing our cups of tea on the yard floor. At the time, and in the panic, I had thought it was a hornet (ignorant I know). Wish now I'd stayed around and savoured our luck a little better. What a sight though. Just like the one in your fine picture. Should they be here? Are they native to anywhere in particular.
Anyway, hello and warm wishes to all of you.
