This little guy is actually a skipper - a special sort of butterfly, often with very rapid wing beat. Looks like a Yellowpatch Skipper (Polites coras), among the most common species in the east - but its range is pretty much all of North America.
As a biologist, I always thought collecting insects would be a cool hobby. But now I think collecting their images is probably more fun, especially with the geat cameras and lenses available and the ability to share them with a huge audience over the 'Net. Check out the field guides to bugs and other critters at your library or most larger bookstores. I just love learning stuff about my subjects!

I really like the color combo of the skipper and the flowers. Good job. Those skippers can be a challenge since they don't sit still for long.

Thanks, BE and Tammie, for your nice comments.
Dale65bama - Thanks for the id. I've always been fascinated by the insect world. I was actually thinking of becoming a biologist when I was a kid, but then for whatever reasons, I ended up in the business world. However, my interest of the nature has never deminished and I still have the eager to learn more. I want to buy a good insects book with good color photos. Do you have any suggestions?

I'll agree, the colours are superb.
This is a good book (despite the name) on insect biology, although I have only the first edition, picked up second hand for $20. The newer one is just way too pricey !. I guess imilar volumes exist for North American insects.

Great photos. Our skippers (San Diego area) just started to show up in numbers and are yellow in color. They do not stay on a flower more than two to three seconds, hard to get set up in time for a good photo. Your photos are excellant and well composed.

Very nice shots here and nice work taking so many angles to allow the IDing, the Yellow patch name I believe is an older name and it's now called the Peck's Skipper same critter just a different name.

Thanks Dennis. Yes you are right, they don't stay long to pose for you. This guy flew from flower to flower. All three shots here were from three different locations because the most I could do was to take one shot (only if I got lucky) at a time.
