Hi All,

I just received my 20D with a 17-85mmIS last Thursday and have been shooting with it alot to test it out.

The firmware I am on is 2.0.2 (came with the camera already)

Everything seems to be ok and I am pretty happy with it except for a couple of things:

1. The image counter started at IMG_0501.JPG
I thought a brand new camera should start at 0001??

2. Cfn13 (AF point selection method), option 2 (Quick control dial direct) does not work for me. Athough option 1 (multi controller direct) works.

3.The EXIF data recorded is incorrect (image size, orientation, custom function).

For example:

File: IMG_0501.JPG
File size: 2,547KB
Camera Model: Canon EOS 20D
Camera serial number: 4f5403354
Firmware: Firmware 2.0.2
Owner: unknown
Date/Time: 2005:08:04 20:48:02
Shutter speed: 1/60 sec
Aperture: 5.6
Exposure mode: Auto
Flash: Built-in Auto
Metering mode: Evaluative
Drive mode: Single frame shooting
ISO: 400
Lens: 17.0 to 85.0 mm
Focal length: 47.0mm
AF mode: AI Focus AF
Image size: 858983856 x 590809376
Orientation: 858914817
Image quality: Fine
White balance: Auto
Picture Effect: Normal
Custom Functions:
Default settings

Further, after I turned on some of the custom functions, it recorded this:

File: IMG_0825.JPG
File size: 4,109KB
Camera Model: Canon EOS 20D
Camera serial number: 4f5403354
Firmware: Firmware 2.0.2
Owner: unknown
Date/Time: 2005:08:06 15:34:17
Shutter speed: 1/200 sec
Aperture: 5.6
Exposure mode: Av
Flash: Off
Metering mode: Evaluative
Drive mode: Single frame shooting
ISO: 100
Lens: 17.0 to 85.0 mm
Focal length: 24.0mm
AF mode: One-shot AF
Image size: 18877872 x 2099488
Orientation: 1
Image quality: Fine
White balance: Auto
Picture Effect: Normal
Custom Functions:
CFn 1: Long exposure noise reduction: ON
CFn 2: Shutter release: AE lock; AE button: AE + AF
CFn 8: Shutter curtain sync: 2nd-curtain sync
CFn 11: Menu button return position: Previous (top if powered off)

From the above Cfn data, I have noticed the following:
First of all, CFn 1, 2, 8, 11 aren't what the above stated (e.g. CFn1 is not Long exposure noise reduction)

Second of all, I turned on a total of 5 custom functions, but only 4 incorrect ones are displayed

Third of all, I did not turn on the SHutter release: AE lock Cfn, nor did I turn on the Shutter curtain sync Cfn

Does anyone know if the above is a result of something I have missed? Has anyone else experienced similar issues?

1. Did you use an old card? You can reset the counter to 0000 using the menus. There's a trick to reset it to the number you want, someone else will be able to link you to it.
2. I like the multi controller best anyway, or the thumb wheel. It's probably understanding, it's unlikely to be the camera if all the buttons and switches seem to work for their other functions.
3. Strange. What app are you looking at the EXIF with? Mine works fine.

Good luck getting it all working :) I wouldn't bother too much about it myself, so long as the rest of the camera works ok.

Thanks for the quick reply Tim.

I just figured out why these issues occurred.

2. It did not work because I did not have the power switch set on the right bit, i left it on the "ON", but you actually need to it be set past the ON bit, i.e. the /-- bit

3. EXIF data - it's my breezebrowser - I am using version 2.4b...

Thanks for your help though! :)

Loving my 20D now :)

Your reported EXIF data looks like it's coming from a program meant for the D60 - CF 2, 8, and 11 are all being reported as what the D60 has there. Had you really shot some 300 photos between the two examples you posted? And do you also have a D60 or another Canon contemporary with it?

I'd agree with Tim - try using Canon's EVU or DPP to read the EXIF data, and make sure you don't move a card from one camera to another. It's quite easy to reset the image number to wherever you want it to be. Just rename a folder and file with the last number you "should" have used, put the camera to "auto Reset" file numbering, insert the "doctored" card, and change numbering back to "Continuous".

Thanks for all the help guys.

Yeah it was my breezebrowser that was playing up - it's an old version and it doesn't support 20D.

With regards to the image number, not sure why it started at 501, coz my other camera (G2) isn't at that number anyway... I was only concerned about it from the point of view that potentially the camera was used...

but all the images are fine, and now that i have sorted out those other 2 issues (cn13 and incorrect display of cnf in exif), i am more than happy with it now.

P.S, I received the 20D last Thursday and I have already shot 1500+ photos!!!!! Loving the 5fps, fast focus and low noise!!!!!!!! :D

Image miscount could also have come from a test card at the assembly plant. Either way erase a CF card, change the numbering in your menu, shoot one shot on the 'blank' card. Change menu back to "continous", reinsert the CF card and all shots following should line up ok.
If you are going to be shooting a lot - you will probably rename your images anyway so it isn't all that critical. If you are concerned about 'total shutter actuations' - forget about it, I'm at 30,000 and at this point I just don't care one way or the other.......

Yes, but how many of them are keepers?

Immaterial, so long as they're all learners.
