Hi - I'm working as a foto-journalist and i want to upgrade my good, old Canon D30 in the next weeks.
But i cant decide what to take: A Canon 10D or 1D...

I prefer the fast 1D, but
- its a cmos-chip and
- has only four million pixels...

What do u think is the better choice?

Greetings Leineweber...

----------
P.S.: Does someone know, when canon plans to upgrade der 1D?

Canon has upgraded the 1D, they have the 1Ds which is 11 Meg Pixels. Retaill is about $8,000 US

leineweber,

It depends on how you plan to use your camera. The 1D is a great camera for sports shooting 8 frames per second. The 10D with it's 6+ mega pixels is more suited for studio work.

I have the 1D for I shoot a TON of sports.

I think the 1D has a CCD and the 10D has the cmos

The 1D is weather sealed. It has 45 AF points. It is 4.X MP vs 6.X MP.

The cost difference is pretty large and the reason is the 1D is made to take some extra punishment the 10D may not be able to stand up to.

I would base my decision on how I would use the camera.

TonyK has hit the nail right on the head.

Carefully determine whether you need the weather seals & speed of the 1D.

Those, (and the ability to change viewfinder screens on the 1D) are the major factors that weigh in favor of the 1D.

If you don't need those advantages, that extra $2,000 could purchase some top quality glass that will improve your chances of getting the "keeper" shot a lot more than any camera body will do.

This is the same problem I'm having. Do I buy the 10D or 1D? I'm in the elements all the time and need a durable camera to shoot wildlife and scenics. Not one that will crash in bad weather. I don't need the 8fps to shoot birds in flight. I'm from the old school and I'm not one to update my gear every few years. In my field you don't need all the bells and whistles. Even though they are fun to play with! I invest and keep it till I see a reason to change. I'm shooting EOS1n bodies now with everything from a Canon 20mm to a Canon 500 F4. Most of the time on velvia. For my wrap magazine covers (front and back one image) I shoot alot of medium format. Any advice on which camera would be best for my needs? Thank you.

My suggestion is going to be painful at least to the pocket book. Get the 1Ds for your type of work. I believe it is still weather sealed, it is the upgrade from the 1D with a full 35mm sized sensor using CMOS technology (smooth, very low noise images).

I think you will be pleased with it.

Take care,
