@butterflykisses

A good start there but i think the perspectives are wrong. The first I think should have the top picture more square as to give the impression of jumping through a 'door'.

The second picture I also think the pespective of the photo should be small end left, large end right as if the canoeist is popping out of the picture.
Just a thought :)

Okay, so here's my very first attempt at this and yes, it was fun. The hardest part is doing the shadows, especially the drop shadow around the picture frame. Anybody got any ideas on how to do these without airbrushing?

Very original thinking and an interesting subject..That is one cool ninja turtle!

How did you do your shadow? Airbrush?

Good work.

My first try:
http://www.jeece.net/photo/IMG_0773-oob.jpg

Good idea, but weird result.

After browsing a few folders for a better pic, I found a squirrel pic, just perfect for this effect... I began photoshoping away an ordinary out of bound picture from it while listening my Winamp playlist. Then this song by Ah-ah came on, and my project took an unexpected turn...

http://www.jeece.net/photo/IMG_0507-oob-TakeOnMe.jpg

Inspired from maybe the greatest music video special effect for its time.

Nicely done! Perfect timing for that song to come on, it worked well for your photo... Could be a good theme for the peanut as well... "Take on me"...

Time for another one...I'm sure I could've got that awning at the bottom of the building to stick out of the frame again somehow...
EDIT: HeY! I did get the image to stick out at the bottom.:-)

May I just say that I like your posts but the one of the girl on the rocks is wrong.

Its the drop shaddow that you applied.
This is how it should look to make it more realistic.
Hope you dont mind.

Judging by the shadow on her body vs the lighted side of her body the light is coming from the right and slightly behind. That makes the shadow that you placed wrong. Not trying to stir anything... just pointing out the direction the light comes from.

Mike you are spot on thanks for that.
The point I was trying to make were the shaddows had to give the immpresion that the model was sitting up and appearing to come out of the photo.
Well spotted LOL!

Oooh, what about putting the break right at the back of the boat? So that the entire boat is out of the water, and the only thing in the frame is the wake?

I think that might help give a better sense of speed.

I think you might achieve a better effect if you crop slightly above the squirrel and have the 2x4 coming out of the frame as well (and maybe even the upper portion of the feeder). That way the perspective wouldn't look so much like an MC Escher picture. ;)

To all of you Out-Of-Bounders:

I don't have any out of bounds pictures (actually I took the rear end of a mayor just last week, mostly by accident, which is pretty out of bounds) but I wanted to say that 99.9% of the posted photos in this thread are absolutely awesome. You have got me inspired to start playing around with this idea, and who knows, if I get decent results before this gets old, I may be able to post my attempts.

So a hearty thanks and great stuff, ya'll...

Yes they are inspiring work so I had to give it a try too; Not happy with the shadow work inside the frame next to the flower. Outside the frame isn't too bad but maybe should have been a little less dark on the frame. Shadows the black art! Looked for tut but couldn't find one on working or creating the shadows. Some of the tutorials I found were very frustrating they were good up to a point and suddenly assumed you new what they were trying to instruct and stopped holding your hand. Poof lost in space!!

Hello everybody... really nice works here.

Here is mine! (1st post, 4th attempt)
(my girlfriend on a rocky beach).

http://vcg.isti.cnr.it/~tarini/files/mypictures/tre.html

I've tryed making it as convincing as possible, using only a very subtle OOB effect (most of the image is inside the frame).
Personally I am very sadisfied: somethings really makes her pop out in 3D (IMO), while the picture still feels like a picture (not a portal), leaving the 3D/2D ambiguity.

I've tryed adding shadows, but I prefer it without.

BearLeeAlive: "You should insert your image here..."

oh, ok, I understand it is easier that way. Before I linked to the webpage because I prefer my white-backgrounded pictures to be surrounded by a lot of empty space, which is easy and cheap (band wise) to do with html. That is how the above jpg is designed to be seen (otherwise I would have added a lot of white space around) so look at the webpage (http://vcg.isti.cnr.it/%7Etarini/files/mypictures/tre.html) for a better effect.

BearLeeAlive
25th of January 2007 (Thu), 14:38
Ah, I do understand your thoughts with this, it does have a real nice effect surrounded completely with white space. I just know that some folk (me sometimes) don't bother to look when it is a link.

Just to let you know... the extra effort was worth it. My 2 year old daughter was looking at this with me and said "I love kitty!" She tried to 'pick the kitty up!'

Good Job

I followed the instruction on this link (http://www.worth1000.com/tutorial.asp?sid=161043&page=7) and had problem on the last step. How do you create a drop shadow for the frame and subject? Can someone tell me step by step instruction for doing shadow as "step 7" on that tutorial?

thanks

Dozer...just got back today from our Caribbean cruise, glad to be home!

Very well done on your "Medival" compositing OOB! I am going to try this summer to get up to my first Medival recreation up near St. Louis, they look like they would be fantastic photo opportunities galore!

I like it overall except the left hand is a little un-natural to me. I wonder what it going to be like if you can spill out the sheet too. It may turn out to be kinda interesting.

Danellyn,

Well done on your OOB! :)
I would as the previous poster mentioned though, spillout some of the sheet to cover the missing areas of the cuties arm/hand.

After you posted i tried for a few attempts but the original photo just had a bulge of sheet infront of her hand so im going to leave that one alone. I have more on the way. Im actually going to take a photo with the intent to change it into an oob :D
