Have only just caught this thread, and have to say that there are some amazingly wonderful creations in here. Especially like the firetruck by Dozer, just above, combining the out of frame with the change from B&W to colour. That works so well and makes for an absolutely wonderful image.

Inspired by Dozer's firetruck, I did one of my own car. Unfortunately PS7 doesn't have the facility for 'warping' (at least not directly, I can't figure if there is a getaround by some other method) so it still has straight borders.

I'm rubbish at Photoshop but after Serrator's excellent tutorial, I came up with this. What do you think, for a first attempt?
http://images.fotopic.net/?iid=ytfa2s&outx=800&quality=100

It's lucky I stumbled across this technique because I liked this recent photo of an off-road trip but the sky in the background was blown out and there were some power lines crossing the photo. This has enabled me to get rid of the sky completely.

Grace's Hand, being twins I needed to show which hand belonged to which twin with in the picture and not by the picture title.

Yes, only CS2 & CS3 have the warp feature. To some extent you can bend the frame with the liquify tool.

It's actually easy, the color layer is on top of the b&w layer, and I just use a very large soft eraser brush and erase the part that I want in b&w.

these are all very good first go at it.

One thing that really makes it look real, is the shadows. Always try to have the same light direction that the picture has while making your shadows.
You'll master this with some practice and by trying different effect.

Serrator has made these tutorials (http://www.logicscape.com/oob_tutorials/) for you to use. give them a try.

Looks like another excellent thread to develop some GIMP skills....

As to Thomas Allens' book, Kendoway, did you notice that in many of those shots, the table-top is exactly the same? Same angle, same cracks.
It's as if it is just the table on which he stands cut-out figures with the lighting just so.....and probably his camera on a tripod in the same position.
I love the creativity to come up with such a concept, but after the 5th or 6th, I thought, "Next....?"
Honestly, I think the posts in this thread show more skill, but it's just my opinion.

That's a nice one Rich! You might consider cloning out the water spray on the leading edge of the SeaDoo (the part that's OOB), as I think it will add to the illusion. Otherwsie, awesome!

^^ Yep, a good one Sky.

Try the tilted/distorted/perspective frame next time, it adds some extra punch.

Thanks for the "thumbs-up" Dozer and Chris, and I'll play more with the frame and background next shot, too. That first try only took me about 25 minutes as I felt guilty after all the model-tilt-shift entries not to post a shot after subscribing. But I'll have another go VERY soon!

Will do...though not today as I'm supposed to be going to school to prep' for some students coming tomorrow....and doing some shopping....and planning our road-trip to Hiroshima this coming Friday....and....and....and....
[Hmm, maybe being self-employed is going to result in less time for POTN play:(]

I am not a wedding photographer, and not trying to become one, but a young couple at church asked me to do their wedding, and I was glad to be able to do it for them. Here are a couple that I played with from the before-wedding shots.

Serrator's tutorial is the one I use (the one linked to in the above post). It really is simple. The hardest part about it is hair. For starters pick a pic that has only smooth edges where you will want to cut out, until you get the hang of it. I haven't done this enough to have the steps memorized, so I just saved his pdf version of the tut on my desktop and have it open while I do the editing. Show us something and we'll help you out!

Oh, and in the one with the groom and his men, each drop shadow I created as a separate layer. There's probably an easier way, but I don't know it. And with the drop shadows, create the shaded area with a larger part of the person you want to have a shadow of, then move it, and mask out what you don't need. Be careful, because the only place you want the shadow - at least for the effect I was looking for - was on the frame itself.

Here are a couple that I played with from the before-wedding shots.

The bride (and gals) shot works really well Hop, because of the downward angle. Love it. I'd go back maybe and re-lasso/magic wand the hair again and see if you can get that a little sharper. Nice one :)

Greg, I like the power of the perspective on the cross. I agree on the frame, I'm not sure how I would do that one, but I think that cross would make a good "power" shot for a church slide.

Edit:
Scratch that.... The more I look at it, the more I LOVE it. I really love that shot.

Try it with the drop shadow from the cross landing on the frame, but not on the background and see how that looks, too. That could give it more depth, I think. But yes, try again - that shot is really worth doing something with.

I think I'll have to go find a cemetery, with a cross that's old, and see what I can come up with. I'd like to use something like this on a slide at church (I'm in charge of the sound/video booth). Thanks for a great shot to give me a great idea!

Greg, your image inspired me to stop at a cemetery tonight and wander around with my camera. Next time I think I'll take something to stand on, though. I have a few shots to play with, but I couldn't look through the viewfinder while taking them, as I'd need to be about 4' taller. I want a shot of a weathered cross like yours though, to use at church. I'll find one, but for the moment, I'll play with what I got tonight.

@ hopemdic: Liking it, framing is more on the right plane than mine - I'd be tempted to go a bit tighter on the base on the left side and tone down the bg noise a little. Have you tried a duo tone on it (yeah I'm a sucker for toning it seems)?

@ Serrator: Thanks and dammit, looks like I've got to make the next ones better than the first ;-)

Not sure what you mean by duo tone - that's a new one on me.

Had to rack my head on how to explain it.

It's called Split Toning in Lightroom or duotone in Photoshop - or simply toning elsewhere.

You can set a colour to be used for shadow tones and another for highlight tones whilst altering the balance inbetween.

The frame / background on my shot are example of it (although not strictly true as I picked two colours and did a gradiant fill but you get the idea)

Couple of image links to explain:

Orignal Pano (http://www.darklight.org.uk/images/potn/landscapes/brianconpano_Web1024_001.jpg)
Warm Brown Toned (http://www.darklight.org.uk/images/potn/landscapes/brianconpano_Web1024_001-3.jpg)
Cool Blue Toned (http://www.darklight.org.uk/images/potn/landscapes/brianconpano_Web1024_001-2.jpg)

Hurray for resurection. I like it, especially the yellow bg toning. One thing, just above the prop cowl there appears to be a bit that's not masked out correctly as it covers the bg and frame?

You've reminded me to try another when I find a suitable subject.

That section that's not masked was difficult to decide what to do with it - it is the third blade of the prop. While I like the position that I put the frame in relation to the plane, prop blur is difficult to mask. I'll have to learn a lot better techniques in Photoshop if I'm going to be successful with prop blur masking.

Thanks!

Ahh, that explains it then!

Transparent sections are a nightmare aren't they. You could cut out the prop sections to another layer in PS and then "fiddle" (hell thats my limit with those sliders) with the blend if sliders of the layer, that should make some of the grey sections transparent...but someone with more experience than me might be able to offer more advice on those.

Still loving the colour.

I'm afraid I'm a GIMP-lover (see the sig.!) and I'm ashamed to say I've not added to this thread for way too long, but in Photoshop you must have at least as many tools as I have in GIMP....
So, you need to look into adding a shaded area under the frame. In my current projects (which are paid for, and won't ever come into POTN!) I use layers and masks so that I can 'pull through' to the photo layer as much or as little as I want.
If you're new to pixel-level editing, don't stress....it just takes time to rethink the world of the photo! And it's great fun when you show clients what you can do, compared to their 'friend who has a digital camera...'
:D
Regards for now,
Simon
