Great pic Petra! Really love the 3D look, it's pretty amazing how an added frame and a little perspective can change a photo so much... wow!
Haven't got any of my own, but it reminded me of another photo, made by another swede...

Great guys! You're getting it. :)
The trick with the OoB is to make the illusion that the image is popping out of its frame. What I did was to make a white frame, to immitate a image frame, then messed with the perspective to let it look 3D. After that I removed the parts on the frame that I wanted to show *above* the frame, like flower petals and the back of the bee. After that I removed the outside of the frame on the image of the bee, but left of course the back and some of the petals to stick out of the image.
Here's a tutorial that explains how to do it more in detail:
http://www.worth1000.com/tutorial.asp?sid=161043
And here is a way to make it go a bit further (look at the bottom image):

I had tried putting a shadow falling off the penguin, but I couldn't get the angle right. If you look there is a slight shadow under the wing in the photo. I tried my best to match that with the PS shadow I put in. When I added it to the penguin it threw off the illusion for me.

That's kind of what I was going for...as I said, I'm not sure I pulled it off. I was trying to do it without using the perspective trick. Ok so I've been working on two different tutorials trying to do this out of bound effect for 2 days now and I'm so frustrated, I just can't get it right...with the worthy1000 tutorial I get all the steps up to the frame and at cutting out the middle section of the rectangle it deletes everything and if I skip that and try to go to the next step it won't black out the parts I don't want in the picture. Can anyone explain it to the stupid girl? I love the effect and I'd love to get at least something right.
Thanks!

Try this for the frame.
Add a new layer & call it whatever you want. On that layer, make sure your foreground colour is white and add a rectangle over the image but inside of the parts that are out of bounds. It will fill with white and obliterate your image. Move the layer down the list until it shows behind your image as a white frame. There may look like there is some reaction where the out of bounds parts are but they will disappear when you flatten the image.

THanks for the help but that still didn't do it. I must be doing something wrong, I still can't get the frame to show with the picture, I get the little "cut out" lines but no frame, nada, nothing. ARGH. I guess one of those things I'm not suppose to do huh?

Had another go at this, what a learning experience. Discovered the transform | perspective & transform | distort tools. The addition of a graphics tablet was a great help in making a neater selection during the process. The one greatest help in making this image was D Barbers breaking out tutorial which is available as a PDF document over at action central. Well enough waffling - here's the picture.

I am new to Photo Shop and do not understand very well so forgive me if this as a dumb question. I have been trying to follow your tutorial for some time now and can't seem to get past the frame step. I have followed your steps as and set up the layers, added the masks. Every time I select an area inside the white box to to make a frame I have problems. When I cut (control X) the inner area, the whole layer turns white rather than cutting out the middle section, making a frame. and the name changes from "frame" to "shape 1"

That would look pretty cool... I'll see if I can work it up. This one is for a school project that my wife is working on, and the laid down background wouldn't really be appropriate for it. See my post on page 2 of this thread of our dog grabbing a tennis ball... http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=91118&page=2

I like this one but what I'd really like to see is the frame on an angle so that it looks like it's jumping out the front of the frame instead of the side.
it's cool either way I just think it might look a bit better.

And here is a way to make it go a bit further (look at the bottom image):
http://www.swish-db.com/tutorials/view.php/tid/632
Ack... I've spent over an hour just trying to do this part:
Page 3: Framing
Next, I take a few moments to look closely at the original and decide where the best perspective is for my frame, the part that will set it "out of bounds". Since this shot has such a great natural perspective, I'll be working with that, making the front part of the frog the focus "in-frame" and his back legs "out of frame" as if he was walking into the picture.
In the Frame layer I'll draw a white rectangle of the approximate size I'd like my finished frame to be.
I'll then make a selection inside the box to allow for the thickness of the border. And cut away the excess. (CTRL-X)
CTRL-X turns everything white... Making a frame in CS2 can't be that hard to do... can it???

Can this be done in elements 2.0? If so how about a tutorial!
OK, I found the tutorial. The problem is it seems it is for PS not elements 2.0. It seems most of the instructions work but I can't see how to do the layer mask? If I did it right then I don't see how to "select" the layer mask as per the tutorial. The little "mask" icon is not visible to me in elements?

I have never posted here but after seeing these pictures I had to try this. I have had Elements 4 for about a month now and have never used it for anything other than some cropping or maybe a little color correction so I am a rank amatuer. I stumbled through the process and don't know if I can ever do it again. Please tell me what you think.

I think it is great, I wish I could figure out the "mask" part of this. I"m using Elements 2.0 and don't seem to be able to create a "mask" on the black or white layer?

My picture was an accident of sorts. This was my first time to use layers and since I never read instructions I couldn't make the layers work for me. I had a frame around the picture but it was over the picture and not under it. I somehow managed to delete the frame and ended up with the picture I posted. That is why I said I don't know if I can ever do it again. As bad as I hate to read instructions I am going to have to read up on how to work with layers.
This is fun. Now I have to find some more pictures to experiment with.

here is a tutorial i found for oob for elements users, since we don't have a mask feature.
in elements it is called clipping.
