I finally took posession od a DSLR. I got my 10D last week. I already have experience with EOS film cameras, so I am familiar with the "creative zones". I have set the camera for auto white balance and am saving images in RAW format. (Even though I have been lurking in forums for years, I don't know what RAW means.)

I am hoping to get by without purchasing additional software for right now.

Using the included programs, File Viewer Utility and Elements 2 for processing images, what are recommended workflows?

I am using Windows XP and 98.

Thanks in advance.

Hello MrEWorm,

If you go to Software section, there is a message call "Should I be using Raw? Roger_Cavanagh wrote a extensive report about RAW files. It is worth looking at and saving for future ref. Here is an other helpful tip if you don't understand histograms http://luminous-landscape.com/tutorials/understanding-series/understanding-histograms.shtml
A feature that is cool on your camera and this site has a lot of good information.

Also I would recommend in buying this book:-
"Photoshop Color Correction" ISBN: 0-321-12401-4

This will give a whole new insite on color correction, workflow and the power using PhotoShop. I am sure you can use the same features in PhotoShopElement. Most of your corretion is done by using "Levels and Curves". This book will take you step by step and help correct little mistakes when taking pictures and correct those old photos. ;-) Make sure to read it from front to back. ;-) Also, it will teach you how to correct photos on a non-calibrated monitor.

If you want to do some fine art printing with your desktop printer go to www.inkjetmall.com. There you will get information on pigment inks and what printers are being used by Graphic Designers and Photographers.

I am sure PhotoShop Element is fine with XP & 98, but I will recommend Window 2000. It is a little bit more stable then all the MS OS (I have a network of computers at my home business: 1 Linuxbox, 1 Notebook, 1 file/printer server and 1 Graphic/3DAnimation), when doing graphic design and photo editing. This information is to help you in the future if plan to create your own digital dark room. :-) Stay away from MS ME. You will get a lot of crashes and lockups. XP is fine but 98 you might have problems. I used get a lot of crashes when designing in 98. When 2000 came out it was awesome!!! Less down time, I mean less down time. :-)))

If you need more help on this matter please email I would be glad to help you and help you with out spending a fortune.

David

I liked the article on histograms. I can see how checking that which each shot could bring about a quick improvement in my composing. On the 10D, I see that you push the "info" button while the playback image is being displayed. Any idea if the playback can be set to default to the "info" setting without pushing the button?

I'm still reading Rogers response to RAW questions on the software board. That one looks like I'll have to sit in my thinking chair and read it again.

Thanks again,

JCSS
