I selected two Canon cameras and I'd like your opinion about which one I should buy...

first I must say I will use it for family, travels, etc. (all around use)
I don't intend to make a lot of prints just CDs, DVDs (maybe few prints made in a photo store and only

I recommend the s230. Although you think you may not want prints greater than 8x10, but when you crop the pictures, you may need the extra resolution. Also, when you watch the pictures on your computer, and if you have a high res screen, you will be better off with more pixels. Do you plan to take video clips when you travel? The s230 take VGA video clips which is better than the movie mode in the latest s400. I really like my s230 over the s400 because of the vga video mode.

I agree with khs8, if you have the extra $100 it would be well spent. On the other hand, I have the s200 and unless you're into professional photography 2megapixels is plenty good for email etc... I have an HP 7350 printer and am able to print good quality up to 8x10 directly from the flash card. Either one is a good buy...

Thanks for your help guys...
So the S200 is great and S230 greater right?

But here's my concern:

S200 -> 345 euros
S230 -> 475 euros

my problem is that there's a lot of 4MP around 500 euros
like coolpix 4300, Minolta F100, and even Sony V1 (500 euros and 5MP!!)

So I agree to spend the extra 130 but only if the differences are useful for my needs..

On one hand, I would certainly use the big movie mode and cropping would be good with only 2x zoom. Also maybe a 3MP DC would last longer before being oudated?

On the other hand, S200 seems great value for money (its price seem to have reach its lowest level before it dissapear) and good enough for my needs (maybe the money i'll save will help me get accessories or a DSLR later ;-)

yep,guess you answered your own question, i think thats a good plan,altho i really spot metering,w/c my V3 has ,and the V2 doesn't, so i could make my subject pop out clear even in difficult lighting situations,like a concert,where lights change a lot,(colors & brightness).

for family gatherings , the V2/S200 would be fine,so long as you dont print larger than 8x10. hope you get what you need,, cheers,,pc

I just answered someone elses same sort of question. So I am just copying and pasting for you here. I hope this helps. It is in regards to going for the S400 instead. Not much more and will give you a longer run as terms of being happy with the quality than the others. Especially if you want to get an DSLR some day. That is my plan and I figured I could still use this one as an everyday camera. I think with the other two you would be do disapointed in the future if you get the DSLR. Read below.

I have an S400 and LOVE it. My father as the S230 and my sister has the S100.

The differences are big in my opinion. The 3X zoom on the S400 is a plus.

And not only is the S400 4 MP, which is a step up from the 3.2 of the S230. It is a new type of sensor, it is the same sensor as the Canon G3.

As for the movie mode, it is good for capturing little snippets of life, BUT it is no replacement for an actual digital video cam.

I don't have any samples from the S230 but if you would like to see some from the S400, follow this link to my gallery I set up recently (if a picture does not say taken with the S400 they were taken with an older Kodak).

Hope this helps you decide,
