I purchased a Vivitar ring flash and found that it would not synchronise properly with my D30. Thinking it was faulty I returned it to Vivitar and was informed that it was OK but would not work with a digital camera. Can anyone shed any light (no pun intended) on why it would work with a film EOS but not a digital EOS and is there anything that I can do to overcome the problem? I have just received an e mail to inform me that my 10D has been shipped and would like to know if I should give up on the Vivitar and buy a Canon ring flash instead.

WHICH Vivitar? 5000 or 6000 ?
Vivitar 5000 is for CANON FD (http://www.ugonet.com/232409c.html)

I think you'll find that it is not compatible with eTTL at all. I tried it, returned it and got the MR-14EX. Unfortunately you get what you pay for!

Does the flash have auto modes on it?
Then you could use it with-out TTL.

I think, I'll build my own ringlight (not ringflash) :-) with bright white LEDs - 9000mcd
Perhaps small creatures love this light.
For some hours work & some bukazoids.
Look there! It's German, but you can use a translationprogram German/English f.e. www.av.com .. translate (webpage, babelfish)
