I was researching some vacations with my wife and we we started talking about saving up for a trip of a lifetime, when we retire. We don't know what that trip is, yet.

What would be your ideal Trip of a Lifetime?

I have two, one is a villa in Santorini for a month (at least) the second is a safari in Africa, the schmancy ones with cooks and china :)

Without a doubt it's Egypt. Although I've done it three times so far.

Those are good. I grew up in Tanzania, so I have done the safari's. My wife hasn't so that's been a point of conflict for us, although I have never done a luxury safari. Those look really nice.

I would love to do a luxury safari/beach trip. Although, recently, I was looking at Bhutan.

My trip of a lifetime is 24 days away.

Honeymoon, Europe, 3 weeks. It will be busy but we both love photography and plan to take a ton of pictures of all the sights.

London>Paris>Amsterdam>Munich>Salzburg>Lago Di Garda>Cinque Terre>Florence>Rome

We are excited to say the least.

My trip of a lifetime is in 11 days. We are going to Peru and the highlights of the trip will include Lima, Jungle, Cusco/Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu, and Lake Titicaca. Should be a lot of photo opportunities!

Sounds like a great time. I think next year we might do Austria for 10 days. Vienna, Wachau, Salzburg.

I guess my ultimate trip of a lifetime is Japan, but I'll qualify that. For me, any trip should be a fun trip and one to remember for a lifetime.

I did my trip of a lifetime last year. 24-day Mediterranean cruise, followed up with a week in the Italian alps/dolomites. Started in Barcelona, up the coast to Monte Carlo, Italian west coast, greece, croatia, turkey, ending up in Venice, then spent a week at a bed-n-breakfast in northern italy. Very nice.

I tried listing it but it turned into a world trip haha. I plan on taking a trip to Auckland next year and staying with a friends family and the year after that, going to Phuket where my mom was born and raised. Then I will plan a massive one I can take when I'm 27-28 where I can take a few months and just travel through Europe: Paris, Marseille, Rome, all the other major cities and research little towns to go to. I can't wait..

When I return from the trip, I will be bombarding these forums with photos. :)

I booked through a Peruvian Travel Agency (Mystery Peru). It is recommended to go through a local travel agency as they are better equipped to deal with unexpected surprises if they arise. Just gotta be sure you do your research to find a reputable one. Never wire money, always pay by Visa.

Sadly, I am going for only 2 weeks. I wish it was longer. :( With only 2 weeks, the trip schedule is fairly tight and compact.

I just picked up the 15-85mm IS USM lens yesterday for this trip. My test shots IQ are so sharp.... so glad I picked this up.

We did half of a trip of the lifetime last year when my husband and I took all 4 of our sons and our oldest's wife to Hawaii. We plan to return, but next time, just the two of us. I took about 2000 pictures, that's all. Our next trip of a lifetime is China, where I was born, but that's really a dream. I have a little breathing trouble and China, not a great place to be for that.

Next year I hope to go to Tibet and Nepal. This is one of the place i really want to see :D

One thing I do love is our own country. We've seen most of it and just love it, so now we want to branch out. We've done parts of Europe and England and are saving for our next big trip either next year or the year after.

The places high on our list? The States. Yep, the older I get and the more pictures and things I see on the States the more I want to go and do a driving trip right around it.

We'll probably do Europe and England again, but the States is definitely high on our list of places to go. You guys have such a diversity of scenery over there and it is so different from what we are used to, without language barrier problems. My son and daughter-in-law have just returned from there and they were really impressed.

One place we have done extensively and I would recommend everybody to do at least once, is New Zealand. The south island has some really spectacular scenery and the people really are the friendliest we've encountered anywhere. Last time we went there we stayed a while up in the Bay Of Islands on the north Island and we really did not want to leave haha It was that good! It is a place I could happily retire to if family ties didn't keep us where we are.

My wife and I just did our "trip of a lifetime". We went to the Galapagos Islands for 12 days and then to Peru where we did Cusco, the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu for 6 days. The Galapagos part was on a small ship with only 14 other guests and the Peru portion was just us and one other couple. There guides were local and fantastic. The trip was through a company named Natural Habitat. Highly recommended!

Most company's in the Netherlands have 25 holiday days. I have the luck with 39 ;)

For this moment there is no negative traveling advise for Sri Lanka. A lot can change in six moths. We will see :D

About Tibet we really hope to go there in september 2011. In 2008 we had to cancel our trip for a negative traveling advise.

Awesome, what was your itinerary? Did you do the Inca Hike?

No, we didn't do the Inca Trail which gave us more time to explore other areas of Peru. I think I would have struggled on the trail... I found myself really short of breath in the high elevations.

I'm still working on it, but if you're interested, the rest of our Peru pictures can be found here: http://benandwindy.smugmug.com/Travel/Peru (http://benandwindy.smugmug.com/Travel/Peru)

Our trip was 2 weeks and we visited the following places:
1) Lima
2) Refugio Amazonas Jungle Lodge (from Puerto Maldonado)
3) Cusco city and surrounding Inca sites (Tambomachay, Koricancha, Sacsayhuaman)
4) Sacred Valley (critical area for Inca settlements including the ruins of Pisac and Ollataytambo)
5) Machu Picchu
6) Lake Titicaca (visted the man made floating islands of Uros and the scenic Taquille Island).

If you want more specifics on the itinerary, let me know! :)

If in the U.S., I have to say I didnt care for Maine at all. Ditto for Vermont.
Canada I could recommend, but found Quebecers stuck up snubs. Speaki Engli, who me? nah, I no speaki Engli... unless you are spending $ heri sir.
PA I liked; Philly's history is a must see, Pittsburgh was just ok. Boston I liked. Washington D.C. is a must see.
I probably most loved California; San Diego and L.A. are awesome.
Just got back from Florida. Much too hot in Orlando. Went to Epcot, which for the high admission and old attractions I say you should skip. SeaWorld costs mucho $, but atleast is worth it as you get 2nd day for free.
As for Miami; well, was shown around some nice houses, SOBE and Miami I hoped was more exciting, my hotel was in Sunny Isles which was quiet but too far from the action.
Las Vegas was too hot, and I didnt care for the knock-off city scapes such as NYC, Paris, Italy, etc. I dont need to see fakes if I've been to the real things.

So I say, come to NYC in Sept-Nov, visit California, maybe Hawaii, Orlando, D.C.

The war in Sri Lanka has been over for more than a year. Lots of people taking trips all around the island these days. Very few uncleared places.

Was in an east coast trouble spot called Vakarai last month. Company CSR project building houses for the internally displaced along with Habitat for Humanity.

Thing is, people who are going are really putting a lotta effort into bridge building so there is no tension visible. Visiting those areas was unthinkable two years ago.

Tho 8 models and 2 weeks in Bora Bora sounds pretty good to me!

my trip of a lifetime is going to europe (already been there. 26 countries world wide) and going from city to city till I find a place I really love. could be a big city cold be small town. stay there as long as I feel like. moving along. basically free roaming with my wife and I. I have this planned out. I plan on retiring from the US navy and travel the world. The best experiences you will have is interacting with the locals and getting to know their way of life. I wish I could start now, cuz I'd probably never come back to the states.

I'm new here but found this thread and thought I'll join this interesting discussion. A specially when I've read what sbballer33 wrote.

We put (together with my gf) everything we have to sale. Including our flat. ASAP we are going to start our trip... well... at first, around whole Asia. It's "planned" to take around 2 years. Maybe we will continue with other continents, who knows. Budget is our concern so most of the time we will walk, bike a bit and a lot of hitchhiking :)

Backpackers style of living for the next few years of my life :)

Was tired of my job so why not? I'm turning 30 next year. I will be probably not strong enough to do that when im 70 and retired.

Maybe will find other option of spending our lifes too... they are so short.

Broke college kid here. Need a baby-sitter? :)

My next trip will be this upcoming Spring, and I'll be working my way from Madrid to Istanbul via buses and trains for a couple of months. I know my way around pretty well, so nothing should be too surprising.

My trip of a lifetime, however, would be a nice and long 5-8 month journey around South America starting in Bogota, going south to Argentina, and probably ending in Rio. I'll be honest and admit that I already have my route sort of pre-planned. Europe and Asia would be nice again, but after another stint in Europe, I want something fresh.

I'm 74, my wife is 73, and our 3 sons have been long gone from the homefront...and being just plain working folk, all our lives (we both still work, though, part time), with 3 mouths to house, feed, clothe, etc., a 'trip of a lifetime' was not in our thoughts all those years.

Well, last summer my Missus and I are watching the tennis championships at Wimbledon, on TV, and one of us sez something to the effect we'd like to see London, and other parts of Europe due to the history, culture, *old* architecture, etc...and before long (a week or so later) we're at the travel agency at AAA signing up for a two week tour (by tour bus) through Europe!

We flew into Heathrow in London on Sept. 16, 2010 and arrived back in Michigan the end of that month, having covered around 8 countries...UK, Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Italy, Switzerland, and France.

To make a long story short, it was most definitely the 'trip of a lifetime' (for me, at least :)
I shot over 2000 pics, eventually editing/keeping 1800 of them :)

Travel has always been a priority for me. Not that long ago I thought our excursions to far away places was going to be delayed for a few years as we are busy raising two young boys (2 years & 4 years).

Then along came an opportunity to move to Asia (Taipei) and suddenly we're very close to many, many interesting places. Thailand, Borneo, Philippines, Japan, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, Malaysia, China, are all within three hours flying time, and usually under $250.

So far this year I've been to Thailand, Cambodia, and the Philippines. Right now I'm deciding on 12 days in Myanmar or India this February.

I tend to be more focused on a particular area. In Cambodia I spent all ten days in Siem Reap and loved it. If I go to India I'll be there just to shoot traditional Indian dance. Not sure about Myanmar, still need to do some research.

Life is feeling like an incredible gift these days.

This image is from my trip to Cambodia. It made finalist in the PDN World In Focus competition this year.

In Septemner I went to China for a trip. One of my favorites to go. So many beautiful things to see. But for 2011 I have to find some other nice places on the world ;)

For 2011 I booked two trips. One for march to Sri Lanka and the other for august to Mexico, Guatemala and Belize.

I really want to visit the Antarctica. This would be my trip of a life time. We hope to do this in 2012. :o

I love Europe (now live in UK), Australia, South Africa, and the west coast of the US. But I would recommend a safari in Africa as a trip of a lifetime. Lived in Uganda for 2 years and was able to do lots of safaris there. Loved the landscape and the people and the wildlife. Photographers dream. I only had point and shoots while living there and did get good pics, but when I go back to visit in about 2 years I'll have my new DSLR and lenses so plan to get some great shots.

Oh goodness, I guess I'll just keep it simple and say that if I had 0 concerns (budget, time, etc.), my trip of a life time would be to just fill up my backpack, get my camera ready, and head out to see as much of the world as I possibly could, refusing to come home until I had set foot on all 6 continents not named North America. Included would be as many of the 50 states as possible, our two fine neighbors to the north and south, Antarctica, and DEFINITELY Buenos Aires, where I would take lessons in Argentine Tango. I would also go back to many places I visited already, like Paris, London, and most definitely the Dominican Republic. Thailand is on my must-visit list, as well, as well as St. Petersburg and Moscow in Russia.

As far as potentially attainable trips go, I'm almost done with my US Peace Corps application. Should I get accepted, wherever I am invited to serve will be a reasonable substitute for the 'trip of a lifetime' in my mind. Two years living abroad, using my skillsets to help others, learning about a completely different culture, and taking as many photographs as I possibly can so I can share everything about it with my friends and family in the US, all while being provided with enough money to live on so I (hopefully) don't die? Yes please. I'll take that and raise you a dozen exotic illnesses, lack of electricity and indoor plumbing, and the hardest job I'd ever do in my life.

Avec plaisire.

Also, I would really like to go sky-diving in South Africa, New Zealand, or Australia and go zip-lining in Costa Rica and Hawaii. And I want to hike the 14-day trail in Dominica.

I think for me it'd be 1-2 years in Spain with the option to travel to the rest of Europe on mini-trips. Why Spain? Well, for one I'm fluent in Spanish and I love football. =P Plus, I find it really beautiful. Some places in Spain I'd love to visit are Madrid, Barcelona (Sagrada Familia, Camp Nou), Seville, Segovia, Granada, Toledo, Avila, Cordoba, Cadiz, Valencia, Canary Island... I can go on and on haha. As for the rest of Europe, I'd love to go to Lisbon, London, Rome, Florence, Venice, Milan, Paris, Prague, Copenhagen, Berlin, Munich, Warsaw, Vienna... And so on. (: I'm hoping to go to Madrid/Segovia/Toledo in May... Hopefully school and money permits it.

I was researching some vacations with my wife and we we started talking about saving up for a trip of a lifetime, when we retire. We don't know what that trip is, yet.

What would be your ideal Trip of a Lifetime?

AJ

If you want to see lots of culture/art, I'd suggest Italy/Russia.
For rmantic and beautiful landscapes I'd suggest France - Paris and South of France.

I live in Italy and scenese and architecture there is gorgeous as well as some unpleasent stuff such as seeing dead rats in subway in Rome. Maybe rats are gone now. Last time I was there was 1989.

There is no place I've been that I wouldn't love to go back to again, but if I were planning now for the trip of a lifetime at my age, it would be to sail up the western coast of Canada to Alaska, visit Kodiak Island and shoot a Kodiak Bear (with a long lens), visit Denali National Park and Pt Barrow, and after 6 to 8 weeks on the road, to head home.

4) Sacred Valley (critical area for Inca settlements including the ruins of Pisac and Ollataytambo)

Seeing as I plan to continue my DINK (Dual Income No Kids) lifestyle combined with the fact that photography and travel are currently my big passions...I plan to travel A LOT :D

I think my "trip of a lifetime" will probably be the 18 day Safari in Kenya/Tanzania I had planned for August 2012. We are doing a fly-in luxury safari in private vehicles. We'll be visiting the Mara Masai, Ol Pejeta, Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire, and Lake Manyara.

Well it was planned for August 2012, but our July 2011 two week Alaska trip became a bit more expensive than anticipated so Africa has been pushed back to 2013. :( That's ok though, it just gives me an extra year to master my photography skills.

In Alaska I'll be visiting Denali National Park, then boarding a cruise during which I'll be taking a floatplane to a black bear hotspot, helicopter landing on top of a glacier, white pass rail road, 9 hour boat ride to view Kenai Fjords, and two whale watching excursions. I'd like to visit Alaska again someday to visit Katmai.

Other places I plan to visit in my lifetime:

Europe
Mediterranean Cruise
Ireland
Tanzania again (Serengeti in February)
Botswana
Galapagos
Russia (mostly to appease the BF, I'm not so interested in this one myself)

Thailand, Borneo, Philippines, Japan, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, Malaysia, China, are all within three hours flying time, and usually under $250.

This is the great thing about living in Vientiane Laos. Flights to some of the most photographable places on this planet are so close and cheap to get to.

Siem Reap (Angkor Wat) is only an hour away for example. Also domestically there are some brilliant locations in Laos. In the north especially where it's very remote, sparsely populated and quite mountainous. Laos is a brilliant place to be a photographer.

I used Mystery Peru for our private tours and they were pretty good. Of course it costs more than just booking on your own, but for this trip, we didn't want the hassle.

I recommend booking through a Peruvian agency. If anything were to happen or if you need to make changes to the itinerary, its much easier having a local contact vs. calling an agency in a different country. There are good agencies and bad ones... tripadvisor is a good place to do your research.

If you are doing the inca trail, book the tickets early as they have restrictions on how many can go on the trail. It sells out fast.

I did a trip of a lifetime a number of years back, not realizing just how amazing it was going to be. I ended up doing an 80 mile glacier trek (http://www.concordiaexpeditions.com/pakistan-snow-lake-trek.htm) in Northern Pakistan over a period of 21 days. It was just me, 2 guides, a cook, and 14 porters to carry everything. Here's a photo I snapped with a Contax G2 at around 17,000 feet, looking down onto Lupke Lawo (Snow Lake) at about 12 Noon one day. The 9 dots in the distance are the 9 remaining porters at that stage of the trek, catching up from behind after stopping to make some tea:

Weee!! I got to spend a rather outstanding nine months on the road in the upper midwest last year! That was pretty sweet. Iowa, Michigan, South Dakota, Iowa (again), North Dakota, and Illinois, before finishing in Iowa, then heading back to my mom's house.

Granted, this was doing AmeriCorps NCCC, so there wasn't exactly a leisurely element to this trip, but boy was it a TRIP. Still not quite my trip of a lifetime, though, as my previous posts in this thread may have indicated. Super-jealous of people who can actually afford to travel at this point, as I am definitely beyond broke and very much unemployed.

Looking into an English-teaching program in Georgia (country), though! That'd be pretty outstanding to spend several months off doing something awesome like that. :D

In a sense, my 'trip of a lifetime' is past, but I would hope to have opportunities to do something like that again.

In 2005-2006, I spent an academic year studying in Moscow, Russia, then I proceeded to spend 2 and half month travelling all over Europe with a friend (we visited something like 8 countries, so as to be able to spend an appreciable amount of time in each).

And more recently, I spent 4.5 months living and studying each in Warsaw, Poland, and Istanbul, Turkey, during which time I travelled in and around both countries (although I have not seen nearly everything there was to be seen!).

Those trips weren't even with a DSLR, although I still managed to get some really great pictures with the compact cameras I had with me at the time. Now, I'd like to be able to revisit some of these places to be able to see them another time (plus, I believe my skills in composition have improved, especially compared to when I was in Russia, and I missed some great places - such as Capadoccia - in Turkey). Thankfully, I might have an opportunity to go live in Ukraine for a while (for research), itself a great country, and it's really close to Russia.

Not to say that I don't have other 'dream' trips, which I believe would be harder to organize than urban backpacking in Europe (plus, time and money are both an issue since I'm still a student). On top of that list would be a photosafari in East Africa, and just general trips in the southern reaches of the continent, as well as some countries in the West and North, too. So, as a dream photography trip, that would be pretty much just about anywhere in Africa.

Being an avid motorcyclist I would like to spend some time in Europe exploring the history of the countries and playing on the roads in the Alps. But my true dream trip is to hit Peru, offroading through the lush jungles, arid deserts and high alpine terrain would be truly wonderful. Luckily the wife rides too so once the kids have moved out and we can stop fixing the house on a weekly basis we will head south and enjoy our selves.

I love to see older threads make their way back up to the top and generate some renewed interest. This is great!!!!

My "trip of a lifetime" would be to spend an entire year north of the arctic circle. It'd be ridiculously expensive, as I'd want to hop around all over the arctic, in completely undeveloped areas where there are no roads. That'd require helicopters, hundreds of fuel drops, a support team, etc. But I think I'd capture images that I would never get otherwise.
One type of image I would target on such a trip would be indigenous wildlife silhouetted in front of a stunning aurora borealis (done in-camera with a single exposure, of course).

One of mine is a little closer to home, South Beach, Florida. It's a 3-hour drive, well, 2 hours + hour train to save gas, and give me some nap time on the return trip the next day.

I've been a few times just to drink and party but I've always wanted to bring the camera and pull and all-nighter photowalk. I did it once on 35mm film and a Rebel with kit glass when I didn't really know what I was doing and have learned a LOT since then.

I'm going on the 4th and should have my 24-105/4 and 5d back by that time.

Another trip to Alaska,Danali Park especially. Two years ago we went to Glacier Bay, Sitka and Juneau , the time spent there was entirely too short. I now want to see more of Alaska's beautiful landscapes and wildlife.

I'd like to travel thru N. Africa, from Egypt to Morocco. I've been in Egypt and Morocco, but nothing in between.

Not forgetting a trip to the Isle of Man for the TT ;)

I have had friends that have made the TT as well as going to Laguna and Spain for the motogp. Watching isn't for me although haveing a run on the course would be a wild ride. I would love to hit the roads in Northern Scotland too.

Mine would be to spend a week doing a quick tour of Argentina, then taking a cruise to Antarctica. A more likely to actually happen trip of a lifetime would be Iceland.

We just had some acquaintances of ours return from Iceland. They did a complete ring of the island on motorcycles. That is definitely a cool trip that would be somewhere on my list.

There are a lot of beautiful, fantastic places in the world. South Africa remains one of my favorite places to be, particularly the Western Cape, with special mentions for the Eastern Cape/Garden Route and Klein Karoo. Been twice, highly, highly recommend it. Friend of mine I did it with and I are totally in love with the place. If you want Wildlife head to the Serengeti, though.

My absolute best trip ever to date, however, is the one I just got back from: Patagonia (Chilean/Argentine), 2 weeks, little bit of Torres del Paine (mostly in a Kayak, not quite enough time to hike the W...will go back though) and a 13 day cruise of Antarctica with G Adventures. Absolutely, stunningly amazing. Seriously, do yourself a favor and take the trip. Worth every penny and then some. I'm fairly young (31), and there was a good age mix on the boat, including a lot of single travelers, and the combination of people and place made it utterly unforgettable. Check with G, as you might be surprised at the cost (I did the Antarctica Classic In Depth - if you want baby penguins, however, now is the time to go. Love the Ice? December is great for that too)

I will be going back one day. Not soon, though, because I need to replenish my savings account ;)

You just described EXACTLY my dream trip. I'll have to check out G Adventures and start saving my pennies!

You did bring your camera, right? Pics? :D

Have been to 26 countries so far and our best trip to date would have to have been either Egypt (not too safe right now) or our 3 week trip through Western Europe, which included the Olympic games in Torino.

Next up is Australia and New Zealand this fall and then China and Japan next year. Can't wait to see and photograph those!

Antarcitca is really, really not that cold. between minus 5 and 5 celcius (so around freezing). I was the guy with the most camera gear on my trip, more or less (one Nikon shooting dude with similar amounts of gear), but nobody there had any real problems with equipment malfunction. Most had point and shoots, lots of 'entry level' and mid-level DSLRs from both Nikon and Canon with mid-level glass, plenty of mirrorless system cams and even more compacts.

And I went in early spring for Antarctic cruise standards.

thanks. nice to know. this article scared me regarding canon capabilities to cope with the freeze:

Had me worried as well, I'll be honest, but my 'real world' experience is that among the 100 or so passengers (and the 30-odd I talked to frequently-ish), nobody had significant equipment failure. One or two point and shoots stopped working temporarily after getting wet, but we're really talking very small sample size. None of the guys with DSLRs from either brand and mid-level glass had any significant issues. Use a bit of common sense; sometimes the light is terrible, the weather wet and dismal, but it's still an amazing experience and you're better off just using your eyes and soaking up the experience than trying to capture a photographically not particularly exciting shot...

I would love to spend some time birding in Costa Rica.

We went for a week last year, my first time birding, and I have fallen in love with it. I loved the thrill of the hunt, to wait in anticipation and finally get the shot...or miss it and wait some more

Also, a trip on my bucket list to Machu Picchu has been delayed indefinitely...we are expecting a baby later this year...fingers crossed...

After living in Germany for four years, and visiting 30 countries, I would say that our most memorable trip was to St Petersburg, Russia. We spent 5 days there and could have spent five months just in the Hermitage
