View Full Version : Used D60- Mistake?

I just bought a used D60. I was considering the Sony F717, but then I saw the price drop of used D60s due to the arrival of the 10D, so I stretched my budget. I just can't afford a 10D AND a lens, so I got a D60 and a Canon 24-80mm lens and a CF card for what the D10 alone costs. I haven't received the camera yet. Everyone seems to bash the D60 for its AF in low-light, especially since the 10D improves this, but is the D60 really that bad? I figure it should still be way better than the F717 overall, right? I am an amateur photographer just learning, so I don't need "state of the art" right now, and the D60 seems like it should more than meet my needs.
Can anyone make me feel better about this?

Yes, the D60 is a great camera. I enjoyed mine a lot. You will have to do some post processing that you may not be accustomed to with your Sony. I predict you will enjoy it.

Digital SLR is the way to go and you made a good choice. Enjoying mine for over a year now and ignore all complaints, just having fun.

I just uppgraded my faithfull D30 to D60 and I'm absoluttely positively surprised of all the enhancements in D60 compared to D30.
I was well aware of 10D because I made the switch yesterday, but because I got an offer I couldn't ignore/resist I made this seemingly wise decision.
For example AF is much better and faster than I expected compared to D30 and the picture quality is superb.
My D60 was all ready with firmware 1.0.4 so all the typical D60 problems should be solved.
Hearing different complaints about 10D I can't regret having done this switch.
Edit: My D60 was brand new not a second hand :)

Despite all the bashing, I think the D60 is an excellent camera, and with any other "machine" it must be used within it's demonstrated limitations. I did have a bad experience when I got my first one and consequently ordered another body within days of the first one's failure. Luckily I had signed up for Canon's Professional Services repairs and got my camera back (twice...broke twice) within days, and also bought the extended warranty. Now the first body "sucks batteries" and I may send it back for repairs (but only after I get another body first to cover my behind). In spite of these problems, I assume I got a bad batch of camera and am having a lot of fun learning it and using it on jobs. I have no regrets about "jumping in" with the D60, and would love to have a 1Ds, to replace a lot of medium format jobs with a lot more ease. The problems I am working out (daily...I learn things) is post capture processing & file management, which can be awesome. If you get a used D60, perhaps you can get a warranty (try MACK) for used.
