Sometimes I think I should get out more, but since my cold is forcing me to stay indoors I've started to take a closer look at the very few 10D images I've shot.
http://www.pixelpixel.org/10d_1.htm
Take a look at this page, I was quite surprised by what I saw, so I decided to post it for you guys and gals to get your reaction. There are approx 200kb of images on the page.

Oh my gosh! Look what it's done to that red flower! :D
Seriously, between Pekka's report and your example I'm finding it hard not to jump on the 10D ship right away. If I had to find an adjective to describe the detail in your image, it would be "delicate". Or maybe "refined".
I am surprised, however, that the effect of the noise reduction action is so pronounced. As the 10D is touted to have very good results at higher ISO's, was this taken at a very high ISO?
Thanks for keeping us informed.

Hey Roger, so you went and bought one. I bet you are pleased with your little beast. I think its the best thing since sliced bread. I was waiting to see what the 14n was like for this year's wedding season, then thought I'll have to dig deep and buy a 1Ds when I saw the crap results from the Kodak. But now its a no brainer. The 10D is a superb camera. And the noise levels are so low on this camera that for wedding shooters its a dream. Hardly any noise even on ISO3200. Thx for your help last year, I never looked back with my D60 and I shot something like 20,000 images. This year I'll bust 35,000. Can't wait to get my 10D. Cheers Wayne

Get that Visa card out girl! :)

Yes it is remarkable that's why I posted - I knew you of all people would be interested. It's not high ISO: 200. I just reconverted with ACR with no smoothing or sharpening. The noise is "introduced" by the ACR Menus sharpening, and taken care of by the noise reduction, but comparing it to the unsharpened image there's no immediately obvious loss of detail. The final version (that I posted the crop from) looks great next to the other.

Pretty bad except at ISO 80 in bright sunshine it would seem. :)

Like Shaun in Park Cameras pointed out to me: you can have 5 10D's for the price of a 1Ds - that's 31.5 megapixels against 11. :D
Hardly any noise even on ISO3200.
Not even tried that yet.

And with the shutter rated for 150k cycles (I read somewhere), you won't be busting the 10D. :)

Roger:
I think it is ill advised to convert 10D RAWs with the hacked ACR. At the moment the best conversion is given by Canon's FVU. ACR causes too many artifacts and too much noise. JMHO.

Roger,
Super detail and very nice work. I have just jumped into the Dslr game. I come fron 20 years of manual Nikons - and 3 years with an A2E.
Now I'm in a whole new ballgame. Could you give a quick rundown of your digital workflow. I'm using a 10D - PS7 - Epson 2200. Haven't calibrated my monitor yet but a syder is next.
Any help to jump start me would be apprieciated, and yes I am RTFM's I'm sleeping with the dran things. A good basis framework might save me months of false starts.
Thanks,
John Meara

JD,
Thanks for the tip. I was hoping to avoid loading any of the Canon stuff, but I think I must do the comparison.

John,
If you check my web site, there's a bunch of stuff in the Help and Information, which may give you a start. Obviously, it doesn't reflect working with the 10D, but I'm still trying to work that out, :) but I do describe a general workflow.

Roger, Breezebrowser uses the Canon software doesn't it?

Hi Sally,
It uses the Canon SDK (software development kit).
That is not the same as the software that Canon supply with the cameras, but is a set of files that Canon supply to third-party software writers so hat they can implement the necessary functions in their own products. The SDK on its own is not a usable application.

Sally,
As Chris says BB uses the Canon SDK. I know Chris has 10D conversion support, but I'm not entirely convinced he's got the latest Canon library as there are a few things missing/wrong with the 10D implementation in BB.
I've got the disk space and didn't loaded the dreaded ZoomBrowser, but FVU sure is a pain compared to BB.

In an effort to avoid the dreaded Canon software, I down loaded the "Downloader " program and the trial version of BreezeBrowser.
The Downloader program doesn't recognize my "Digibin" portable hard drive. It will download from the cf card directly. That would be something of a nuisance as I intend to dump the images to the digibin regularly rather than fill numerous CF cards.
Is there a work around for this?

It looks like the Beta of the new downloader hanbdles the digibin

Roger,
Your site has been added to my favorites file, to say you have "a bunch of stuff" is an understatement. I'm glad to find an expert who is "working out" the 10D.
Many thanks to you for the wealth of knowledge on your site,
John Meara
