I have both a 420EX and 550EX flashs. Would the Metz 54MZ-4 operate with them in multi-flash set-ups?

You would need to check the specs on the Metz and see if it does wireless ETTL. If it doesn't then the only way you could use the 550EX with it is with Pocket Wizards. Forget about using the 420EX with no wireless ETTL.

what is your opinion on the dfference between the two flashes. 550/580EX is a bit steap on the price do you think it's worth to start with a 420, and then upgrade to the 550 later on to be able to use bothflashes as master and slave?
I have not used an external flash in the past. (at least not with with an SLR)

The 420EX will slave to a 550EX master.

I used the 420EX for 4 years when I started with my G2. It's a geat automated flash. If you don't need Manual Flash, if FEC is built into your camera body, and you don't want to spend the extra money for a 550EX, go with the 420EX or a Sigma 500 DG Super.
