I have D30 and have shot 5000 images with my 340 mb Ibm micro drive.
I just got my 10D and did the following:
I erased all photos using my D30 in the 340 micro drive.
Then I did a format.
I placed the 340 micro drive in the 10D and took a shot.
The screen said imag # 5001....!!!!
I thought it would start over at image # 0001.
Why?
What if I go out and buy a 512 Mb compact flash; what image number would I get when I took the first shot?

I will report on image quality as soon as I get a chance to shoot some photos with my 100-400 IS lens.

Is the camera's counter set to 'Continuous' ? You might want to try setting it to 'Auto Reset' - perhaps that will restart the counter - then set back to 'Continuous' if desired.

Similiar experience,
On the day I got my 10D, I also picked up a spare CF card. It got loaded into the 10D first.
My images started with 0001. When that card ran out I put in one from my D60 and the numbers jumped up to 8000 something (sequential with my D60). I then put the new CF card back in the 10D and it continued counting from 8000 something. I Actually kind of like the fact that my images will count sequentially no matter which of the cameras they are taken by, so have left it untouched for now.

It appears that the camera starts with 001, but when the card with higher image numbers got loaded it jumped and then it keeps the highest number as future cards are loaded. Just a guess on my part based on limited experience.

I had a similar problem with the starting number. Mine started at file#899 image 9xx.

Canon tech told me to format the card in number reset and then again in continuous numbering.

Did that and it started up at 001.

Just thought I'd pass that along.

Respecrfully,

Joe

Joe,
Thanks for the tip.
I have a question.
How did you format the card in number reset? and then to continuous numbering. The format command doesn't seem to have those choices.

Or, did you use the menu button to set to number reset, and then to continuous numbering.

Thanks,
Nick
