they are only cannibals if they eat their own species........these 2 are obviously different insect species :)

like a little lion eating an antelope or something (they are both mammals but way different)

nasty whatever way you look at it

i would have preferred if i could have got much more light in there and less noise (had to have iso at 400 coz it was so dull)

and a wishlist longer than the great wall of china

Al, does that mean your wishlist can be seen from space? :D

I'm glad you ID'd the fly, I posted one yesterday doing the same thing.....could it be the same fly perhaps? How far is from Cumbernauld to Manchester? :)

Great capture! It's indeed a very sharp pic. Great DOF too. Well done!

I remember seeing one of these for the very first time a few weeks ago, he was on a plant and as soon as another fly came near he ate it, missed the chance for the photo as I was hanging of a cliff at the time and in a rather precarious position:eek:

Nice picture though, well done

Very nice! Which lens did you use and what were your settings? I am impressed with the clarity.

main settings were
Kit lens at 38mm focal length on 52mm of macro extension tubes (1:1.3)
1/200 sec with flash
F22
ISO 400

the kit lens gets a lot of bad press........... shove it on some extensions and it makes an awesome macro lens

The kit lens?? Wow - now I am even more impressed. I am in the middle of a move, so a lot of my stuff is packed in boxes waiting to be shipped (on a slow boat, but not quite all the way to China). I didn't even keep that lens out. And ironically, I bought a macro lens this summer while we were back in the states.

its hardly ironic you made a good choice..
i will be buying a dedicated macro lens theres no denying that...(probably will be next month when i get my sigma 150 :))........... altho you can get excellent results from extension tubes the working distance is terrible i was only about 3 inches away from these little critters...
I'm just having to make do with what i have for now.............. usually i use my ef 50mm on the extension tubes but i thought i'd give the kit lens a go and i have to say i was pleasantly surprised... the good thing about the kit lens is that it can go to F36 which is great for macro work

and you can use the zoom to focus and use the focus ring for fine adjustments if needed
