I currently have the elan 7e and do some amatuer photography at weddings. the elan has the canon ef 28-135 is usm lens. I was thinking about getting the same lens for the canon 10d but the price is a little high...anyone have experince with a good portrait lens for the 10d that isnt 500 bucks.

Can you not use the 28-138 IS that you already have?
Anyhow, B&H Photo sells it for $399

Over the last few weeks there's been a lot of discussion regarding lenses and the 10D. I know because I've been reading and trying to work it all out! Have a look back

Wow! that will keep you busy for a while. Myself, I'm really tempted to just get some second hand lenses and the EF 50mm 1.8 to tide me over. Then, as I learn more about the camera (and my bank ballance recovers) I'll buy some better gear.

Good luck!

The 85mm/f1.8 is a good, reasonably priced portrait lens.

Get a 50 mm f1.8. This lens is sharp as a tack and with the multiplier, it becomes an 80 mm 1.8. this is perfect for portraits and you will spend less than 100 bucks(US). A true bargain!!!

THe 50/1.8 is also the lens I wanted to suggest. I myself am also in the process of buying a 10D, and although I wanted to buy a 15-30 (or something in that direction). I decided to buy the 50/1.8 and invest the money i save into good compactflash cards, extra batteries and the battery grip.
