Storage fot the 10D

Being new to Digital SLR, and having just ordered a Canon 10D to go with my various EOS lenses, I now need to address the issue of storage.

Camera usage tends to revolve around motor sports, vintage aircraft displays and holidays. Consequently it's a case of lots of use in a short period.

I guess the issue is whether to go for lots of CFCards, MicroDrives, or some form of ImageTank device.

I would appreciate your thoughts and comments.

CF cards are more durable than microdrives. according to all on these forums.

a 1gb CF card is now available so a couple of those would do you fine.

I have 512,256,128,64 & 32 mb cards.

512, 256, & 128 for the 10D and they give according to the LCD 60,30,15 images using RAW with Large fine jpg embedded.

obviously a lot more if you just shoot in jpg.

The 64 & 32 are used in my S45 jpg only.

I wouldn't bother with cards smaller than 256mb. The nice thing about digital is that once you've paid for the camera and the CF, taking pictures costs you nothing. :)

With my old D30, on a day out to take pictures I would shoot easily 200-300 shots and sometimes up to 500. I used raw format so 300 shots would fill one 1gb microdrive. The 10D files are twice the size - you can do the math, I'm sure.

If you go away on vacation, then you will need bulk storage like the Image Tank or you'll need a lot of cards.

WRT to microdrives vs CF: I have 2 microdrives and (fingers crossed) have never had a problem. They are more delicate than the cards, but who plays frisbee with their memory cards? :) Still, ignoring the cost, if I was starting from scratch, I'd probably get four 512mb CF cards and some kind of Image Tank as big as possible.

Don’t forget that since he’s doing actions sports, the files will be larger at higher ISO ratings. The 10D seems to have less noise at higher ISO ratings so it'll be likely to cost little in image quality to use them. Ergo, his actual usage may vary, greatly, from yours.

The 512mb CF cards are approaching viability from a price standpoint. That is, they are only slightly more than double the price of the 256mb cards at this point. If you don’t mind swapping cards a lot, the 256mb cards are slightly less expensive per megabyte. If you hate swapping cards, the 512mb cards are quite a bit less expensive per mb than the 1gb cards. Prices may drop within the next 15 minutes, however.

Shop wisely.

I'm planing to use CF with 256 MB & 512 MB - 1 piece from each is enough!

Why buy a microdrive or 1 GB CF, if I get for same price 40 gb + 6in1 reader?
