my only regret was not getting any decent solo shots of Benmont..he's got a lot of keyboards surrounding him.

Nice shots. I like #2 a lot. Petty had a much more colorful outfit than the previous show.

thanks Rich. Mike was superclose on that shot...i took it @ 16mm and you can see the shadow of my lens hood on the stage carpet.
i kinda screwed up and didn't get any good/solo shots of Benmont Tench...I mistakenly thought that Scott Thurston was Tench...
btw, i just found yr photos on State of Mind..the 2nd to last stage shot; did you use the monopod method to get that high?

when do you think security pits will start banning that?

I do it when I'm way off to the side - in fact those shots are cropped quite a bit and in one of them I have all the shooters and the security guy flashing three fingers indicating that shooting was over - it might even be better uncropped. And I keep it low - probably less than a foot higher than a Hail Mary.

yeah, stealth mode is probably the best, and at the end of the set. I do like the perspective quite a bit.
i always get 2nd thoughts when holding a camera over me head, esp for high profile artists. i was thinking of doing it when Campbell got so close to me, but decided to keep my eye to the viewfinder. for club bands, i don't give it a 2nd thought and no one's ever swatted my camera away (though i expect that to eventually happen).

Nice colors but not a great set for me.
2 and 5 are very nice.... Though I am not a fan of shots when the person is not doing anything like 5. (For example: A pet peeve of mine is when people use shots of people tuning up.)
You can not see anyone's face in 1 nor 3 and i think 4 is underexposed.

moemoe, i disagree about #4 being underexposed...his white shirt is actually clipped a bit in the red channel, and his face is about as far to the right as you can get w/o clipping, wrt to the histogram. it's just a dark scene, that's all. i could have lifted the shadows more, but i liked it like that.
also, in #5 he's interacting w/ his band, hardly 'not doing anything.' sure, sometimes it's tough to get a candid smile out of a seasoned pro when they are playing, so you take what you can get.
i realize i only posted 5 shots and 2 had no visible faces, but perhaps that was my fault for not including a larger sample...i included those two as they were about as 'ROCK' a moment as the nearly 60 y/o Petty managed in my allotment :D

Nice set. I'll have to check out the rest when I am at a more friendly computer. Either you had a lower stage or are much taller than me. Most people are much taller than me. :)
I always love your ability to expose properly and I think it translates well into your great colors.
I was surprised at how much energy he had on stage. I did a quick run through and think I have some decent keepers. But yeah, the keyboardist was absolutely surrounded.

I think I like #3 and I like #4.
I've seen better sets by you. ;)

well, here are a couple more (still within my allotment of 8 )...i agree that i've had more dynamic sets, but i did dig this lighting quite a bit...sometimes the performers just sit there and perform. maybe i should have mixed it up more compositionally (which is what #1 was attempting).
unfortunately i couldn't get all of his nice red boots in the frame (racked out @ 24mm)

funny, i was just checking out Petty's site and the shot I took (#3) is on his site from his shooter, from a different perspective, and you can see me taking my shot.
it's #5 of the gallery found here:
