What lens were you using? I'm gonna shoot some roller derby soon and don't have high apeture lenses with the exception of the nifty fifty. Other than that f3.5 + is what I have to work with. Any advice?

The lens for these was the 17-55 EFs on a 7D at ISO3200. I shoot at F4 to get enough DOF to keep the whole pack in focus (usually).

m.d.harper- i see you are in upstate ny- where are you shooting derby?
if its the rainbow room or whatever its called in b-lo, the ceilings are low and you can get good bounced light instead of direct flash.
its a similar venue to what you see here.
i shot there with my 28-135 with reasonable results. but get the EARLY, because it packs out and if you are stuck in the back like i was,
you are pretty much SOL, might as well put the camera away and get a beer..
and what body do you have? if you can crank the iso like bsmotril can with his 7D then that helps. because then it doesn't have as bad of a direct flash look.
do you have a flash??
also, you can really drag the shutter and follow the jammer for some cool shots. just some of my thoughts for ya anyway..

bill - nice action shots. love how much ambient light you let it at that place with all the neon!
