My boss at work has seen I have an interest in photography and has some leftover budget. He has said to me I can have £3k to spend on camera equipment for the 'office' (actually for me to use 90% of the time :D)
So, my current personal kit is:
Canon 400D with battery grip, 8gb & 4gb cards.
18-55mm Kit lens
50mm Nifty Fifty
430 EX II Speedlite
Velbon Tripod & Monopod
My main interests are car photography and the very occasional wedding. But I am looking to get a decent zoom (for motor sport events) and maybe try a bit of macro too. I would like to stay with Canon as I am used to their kit and can use some of my existing kit with the new stuff.
Kit wise my first thoughts were:
Canon 7D with 15-85 Kit Lens
Canon 10-22 (maybe....)
Canon 70-200
16Gb Card
Some sort of bag to keep it all in
What are you thoughts ?

Sorry, I wish I knew enough to help but the 7D, memory & from what I've heard the 70-200 are all good bets.
From experience also go with the Nifty Fifty, very cheap & very good lens.
Another cheap option that I use for macro is the Nifty Two Fifty + Raynox DCR-250, but if you've good money apparently the Canon EF 100mm f2.8L Macro IS USM or Canon MP-E 65mm f/2.8 are supposed to be good.
Hope that helps, or at least gets the ball rolling with people who really know what they're talking about :D

Canon 7 D, 18-200 mm, 85 mm, 16 GB, 2. Accu and a good Speedlight. But I wouldnt by the Kit 400D with 18-55 mm, its not what you need, to simple. Sorry.

I was more thinking of a 5D MKII with 24-70 or 24-105, plus maybe a 70-200 f4 L as well, just scrapes in under budget

Top, 3500 USD the cheapest Price. If you want the 5D Mark II, why dont take the 16-85 mm, and 70-200 mm. Top equipment.

I'd skip the 15-85 and grab the 17-55 f/2.8... instead of a Canon 10-22 go with the Sigma 10-20 f/4-5.6... not sure how that changes the overall cost.

Hmmm I really fancy some L glass though :(
Any suggestions for a 5DMKII kit for £3k ?

5DmkII
70-200 f4
Since the f2.8L is a bit over the limit, and the 5DII has great iso performance.

I will spend 3K on lens... Simple as that... Then you can sell you old kit and get yourself a decent camera if you need it... Maybe a nice second hand from US that it will cost half of what you pay here in UK.
