I've tried a few recovery packages just so I could be sure I could rely on them, and haven't had any problems. They've always recovered the images exactly as they were (RAW and JPEG). Are you able to try another vendor's software? I guess your card didn't come with any because you would have tried that, but have a go with the trial version of PhotoRescue from http://www.datarescue.com/photorescue/.
Without seeing the images, the only thing I can think of would be if you have a version of software that tries to do some kind of intelligent recovery of the RAW files, but doesn't know about your version of RAW so reads the files incorrectly. Anyway, see what PhotoRescue does for you. If the preview looks good, you have to buy the software to save the images.

When you view the files.. are they opening in the same application that you had previously used to view them?
Make sure that the recovered files have the correct file extension.. if you are using windoze.. you may need to change some of Explorers basic setting so you can even see the file extension.. much less edit them (one of the "defaults" in Windows that absolutely has to go)
