I want to purchase a flash attachment for my son's upcoming wedding. Is there a standard recommended flash attachment for the 20D?

For your son's wedding, a 580ex.

There are alot of good choices depending on your budget and feature set that you need.
If you only do the occasional family function and you don't want any Manual controls, the 420EX is perfect. If you plan on doing alot of photography and want to learn about flash and using Manual controls, the 550EX or 580EX(or Sigma 500DG Super) are excellent choices but more expensive.
If money is no object and you will be doing alot of event type photography (weddings, galas), the Quantum T4D is awesome, but at $949 with battery.
If you can share a little bit more about your future plans it will be easier to spend your money. I mean guide you.

Thanks, Camo and Scott.

I did a little research. This was on Canon's site...

Canon's new Speedlite 580EX is perfectly suited to the EOS 20D. It includes a maximum guide no. of 190/58 @ ISO 100 m/ft., which, when mounted on the EOS 20D, automatically compensates for the EOS 20D's sensor size, enabling high output flash, with more flashes per charge. It includes an AF-assist Beam, which works in conjunction with the EOS 20D's focusing system, and automatically sends color temperature information to the camera when the flash fires, for more accurate color rendition with flash photography

I'm a novice on lighting and most of this jargon is over my head. And Canon has something to gain by promoting their "top of the line" attachment. Then again, I don't believe in buying short and then upgrading later, so I'll most likely get the 580.

You're welcome to spend my money, Scott, provided I have anything left after tomorrow. We are heading for B&H in the morning ... Camera Heaven! :D

The 580EX is definitely the best flash, but depending on the circumstances it might not be the best flash. You won't go wrong with the 580.

This can't be exactly right. If it is 190 meters, then it would not be 58 feet. The two numbers must be transposed or else the m/ft is transposed.

Correct. its 190 in ft and 58 in mt.

And as far as the original question goes, with the 580 you just cannot go wrong. So Simple :)

Thanks for making the choice an easy one, POTN members! I was happy to see the instruction booklet that was included... if you have any lighting tips or suggestions, I'd love to hear them!
