Hi folks,
I have a 10D with Grip, and have just purchased the 100-400 L IS, and so far I'm really impressed! What I have to ask is this. I need another couple of lenses for wedding photography, but where I've just spent £800 on the L lens, I'm thinking of buying some non-L lenses, something like Sigma's? But I don't know anything about Sigma lenses. Is it false economy, to go for something quite a bit cheaper than Canon's 2.8 L lenses. Or should I try a Sigma lens until I gain more experience. Does anyone know how they compare against one another?

Many Thanks

i`d agree about the tamron, easily as good image quality as an L lens, just not the same build quality ( still very good) or focusing speed

One schools says buy the best and another school says buy what you need. As a happy amateur I'm of the latter school. If I was paid to take snaps and was in a war zone I'd want the build quality of a L lens.

This standard zoom thing has been discussed a LOT, even within the last couple of days, so a simple search will find some opinions.

I would look at the Tamron, which I had and liked, and the Sigma 24-70 2.8 DG EX Macro, which I now have, the Sigma 18-50 2.8, which I very nearly had, and Tokina 12-24mm f4 which I will have soon. All perform superbly and offer good build and top performance.

I use the Tamron 28-75 F2.8, 50mm F1.4, 100mm F2.8 macro, and 70-200 F2.8 IS for wedding photography. I'd not use a 100-400 at all, unless I was taking photos of the next wedding over ;)

I agree with Tim wholeheartedly on this. The 100-400 is going to be of minimal value for wedding photography. I have always been a die hard Canon fan and don't own any lenses other than their right now but the reviews and work I have seen coming from the Tamron 28-75 is very good. In the little wedding work that I have done I have primarily used my 24-70 so I think that this focal length (28-75)would serve you very well in your wedding work.

Personally, I'd return the 100-400L and get the 24-70L. I have a friend, a pro (a real pro, with studio) who very much likes his Canon EF 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 II USM Lens for weddings.
