G3 and Vivitar 283 Flash

Just ordered a G3 and I was wondering if I could use my Vivitar 283 Flash or should I buy one of Canon's Speedflash units.

I decided to get the 420ex instead.

Thanks for the link, dtaliaferro. After reading the info on the link you referred me to, I think I will follow your lead and get a dedicated flash as well.
