Been thinking of trying IR photography for some time. Hopefully will work up to a better filter for my "L" lenses and maybe even IR film eventually.

My 1st step was a Hoya R72 52mm filter for my 50mm f1:8 lens on my 10D. Decided I'd take the cheap route to see if I can do it.

Filter came late yesterday while I was at work. Got up this morning and even BEFORE I had my coffee I went out and took a few shots.

Considering focus and exposure times are a guess, I'm pleased with my 1st try at IR.

Better to do it photoshop. Sharper image. Fast way is to pop for NIK digital filters. Wonderful tool.

The 52mm Hoya R72 was $40, including shipping from Adorama. Wish to get the 77mm for my "L" lenses but that one is $260. OUCH!

Nothing against PS but I hate sitting at the computer doing that stuff. I'm at a computer most of my work day. Doing anything other than surfing the internet is just like being at work, without pay.

And doing it in PS won't give me the practice I need to move to IR film as I would like to do, eventually.

Those shots were just resized and converted to grayscale ... that's about all I care to do (maybe a crop once in a while as well)

I also have yet to see a PS "ir" image that looks even remotely likk the real thing I'm afraid.. lot's of products make the claim.. but it's not really there.

Have fun with it Johneo.. I am really enjoying IR myself :)

For 77mm, you may also take a look of B+W 092 (650nm).

I don't mean to come off as an IR expert by any means, but I don't think trying to get a good infrared shot in the shade will give you best results anyway. From the shots I've done with my G3 and a Hoya R72, the brighter sunshine makes everything better IR. I'm really pleased to find I can do IR with my 10D, so I'm going to get some rings to fit the Hoya on my 70-200 and my 100mm macro.
