Autofocus not working properly CANON 500D

I'm having trouble with my canon 500d's autofocus (manual, program...creative modes). When I try half pressing on an object it wont focus, I tried different ranges and still doesn't focus on the object (a pringles can on a divider 1 meter away like 45 degrees or so). When I started to adjust the focus (even with the autofocus switch is on), and tried half pressing, then it focuses the object, very annoying.

Sounds like a lens issue, try cleaning the contacts, if not borrow a lens and see if that works, if it does then the lens needs repair or replacement
