I just got this lens. Sucker weighs a ton, but my initial test shots seem decent. Here is my first.
Now I need to find a bag that will hold all my gear, and a lens of this size appears to rule out many options. What bag are you using when you need to transport all your gear, and how do you like it? I know that most of us will use a smaller bag when we get to where we are going to carry only what we think we'll use, but the bag I need now is the one for the car that will hold everything.

Domke F-1X (little bigger Domke) (http://www.tiffen.com/displayproduct.html?tablename=domke&itemnum=700-10S), with the lens hood wrapped around a couple of smaller lenses. The 100-400's the white lens in the lower right compartment of the main bag. Hood's around my 35 f/2 or 50 f/1.8, I forget which. If I have the tripod moount on the lens, it hangs over the edge of the pouch. The 24-70 L is under the 20D, 15-30 Sigma on the D60, 550EX and 580EX in the end pockets, 420EX next to the D60 in the main compartment, Tamron 90 macro and 35 f/2 (or 50 f/1.8, see above) in a main compartment sleeve and 28-90 and 1.4X TC II in the other (next to the 20D). Filters, cards, and batteries in front pockets and flap pockets. Lumiquest and rain stufff in the back compartment (hidden by flap - outside access only). Probably more in there too. A monopod carries nicely on the top under the handle grips.

Check out the Lowepro Computrekker, which will accommodate no problem even though I'm not a 100-400mm IS L owner. There is a version without the laptop storage section too ... probably called the Trekker or something. It's comfortable if you walk a distance. A tripod or monopod can be securely fixed no problem. Lots of storage and little spaces for stuff. Great design. There are images on their web site. I will never need another bag as meets all my needs.

Optimist! I love my Domkes but I still need something bigger (like a Hummer?) to fit everything!

   Yes, I know. I am a minimalist in most things so try not to aquire stuff. I am mainly a wildlife person and so I can adapt to a single long lens, flash and a walkaround no problem. If I miss a shot then hey ho ... and if I need more stuff there is plenty of space still to fill ;)

You think the 100-400 weighs a Ton.........
Try the Canon 70-200mm 2.8 IS L....That weighs alot!!!
I honestly feel the 100-400mm is Light.

You think the 70-200 IS weight a ton?! Try the Bigma, and once you realize that even it isn't too big, try the SigMonster

I wasn't sure the mini would be big enough.

Vjack, this is out of context but I have to ask.
Is that image a crop ?
It seems a bit soft and the noise level is high. I know the 100-400L is better assuming that is full frame and not cropped.
On the subject of bags, I like the Lowepro bags.
A place for everything and everything in its place.
Just look at their website and take your pick.

The Domke looks like a dogs dinner. Sorry Jon.

I have an like the Omni Trekker, which is kinda like a laptop bag. It's not really deep enough for the 100-400 with the tripod foot - the bag will bulge, so I just loosen the tripod foot and twist it a bit, and then it's perfect. It holds too much to comfortably carry for any length of time. This is an old picture. I normally have it packed with the 20D, 100-400, 400 prime, 17-40, 105 Macro, 50mm, 28-75, portable drive, rocket blower, hoods, filters, doodads & thingamabobs, batteries, etc. It's generally packed a bit more than this pic.

I just bought a Lowepro Computrekker Plus. It holds all the gear I need to carry in addition to my very large 17' "laptop". Also has room for my mini dvd camcorder. :D

Yes, the picture was cropped. At full frame, it looks like this:

I finally decided on a Tamrac Expedition 5. It looks like it will be more than adequate for my current gear.

Lowepro PRO trekker. In this pic is 20d with 20-35 f/2.8 and 10D with 70-200 f/4 and etc. As you can see, I have plenty of room to grow on! There is a padded attachment on the side for a HUGE lens as well.
