View Full Version : 10D Reset fix

HI all,
For those who have not seen the post on other fora, Larry Mowrey found an obscure post on a DPR thread that indicated resetting the camera software via the menu option seemed to solve the focusing problem some are experiencing.
I had not been having a focus problem, but decided to do the reset anyway. It did have a beneficial impact. The auto focus seems just a bit quicker, even on objects with low contrast and poor light. It also appears to help the noise at ISO 3200. And the other thing I noticed is that the images, when converted from RAW into Photoshop seem to have a bit more "umph" before doing any post processing.
BTW, the reset appears not to change any custom functions one may have set from the default. Nor does it erase the name entered via the remote control software and USB cable.
Good shooting.

Thanks, David.
My 10D is coming within next two weeks and I was slightly worried :) about this AF issue. I hope your advice will heal the wound :)

I made a comparision between the D60 and the 10D, the color saturation, sharpness and the contrast on the 10D seemed to be lower. I need to increase the three parameters to level it with the D60.
Anyone any comments?
Any I have reset my 10D, and likewise don't have a focusing problem....therefore don't see much.....cheers

I tried - not entirely successfully - to do a before and after comparison on the effects of the "fix".

Roger,
I have found a similar, but not as dramatic effect with the reset. What i Don 't understand is how canon can send these cameras out like this, giving a very negative impression to some new owners. I also am curious as to whether this will have to be done routinely to keep the camera in line.

It does seem strange, I agree. I've seen various theories about ROM and flash memory, but I've not sufficient electronics expertise to comment on the potential validity of any theories.
I didn't believe the reset fix would work, but I have to go by the evidence of my camera. I'm not very happy about it because I worry that this problem could reoccur at any time. I think we need some official comment from Canon, but I'll be very surprised to get one.
As to your final comment, you will see when I update my 10D Blog that I have already considered that periodic resetting might be a good plan. :)

Enjoyed reading your diary Roger. Seems like you are getting the hang of it. I've got my first 10D wedding in two weeks time. This is what I do for a living. Have a look at my magazine albums shot on D60 last year. Wayne
