I would like to get G3 user opinions on other cameras in the same category as the G3.

For the first time pro-sumer digital camera purchaser (like myself) I'm sure a lot of research has gone into the other cameras prior to purchase by everyone on this board. I visited all of the websites (dpreview etc...) but I wanted to get actual comsumer opinions on the C5050 and other digital cameras.

I found myself coming back to the G3 over and over again. I would look at the cp5700 and c5050z, but the photo quality, features, ease of use, and add-on capabilities of the G3 just had me. Anything else to add? Love to get opinions on this.

well dougery,

I was in the same boat before I decided on the G3 and boy am I happy.Ive heard of people returning their cp 5700's and buying the G3.I know for a fact that the nikon is hard to figure.I played with the 5700 a few times and gave up.I've also heard reports of the photo quality of the G3 being better than that of the cp5700.The G3 was the way to go in my case,But to each his own. Some people are very brand loyal and return to certain companies time and time again for their products...not me.The last camera I had was a nikon 35mm.I found the G3 to be very easy to use and understand, also very well built a solid digital camera. It can take the bumps and knocks and keep on ticking.

But regardless of what we all have to say the decision is ultimately yours.Your going to be the one using the camera not us.I suggest going to your local camera shop and trying them all out for youeself.Just play with them for a while and one will surely out shine the rest......I bit you good luck on your quest for the better camera

Hello Dougery, I was one of those people who bought a CP5700 and took it back and bought the G3. The 5700 was so unreliable when focusing, and it continually froze for seemingly no reason.
I have had my G3 for about 6 weeks now, and I am so happy with it. Apart from being so easy to use, (although I do not use all the functions of course), the images are incredible, so are the colours.
Another plus is the wireless remote that comes with it. Being the one with the camera, there were never any photographs of me, with the G3 you can set it up on a tripod, turn the LCD right around and zoom in or out so that you can get yourself and who ever else in, or of course just take some of yourself for the record.
The colours are fabulous, people don't look as if they have a skin complaint unlike the 5700, and it offers so much for the money.
I have the telepoto adapter, and believe me I have compared the 5700 distance shots with the G3 shots, and the G3 are far superior.
Hope this helps, I know what it is like to be undecided, that is why I started with the 5700.
Allen.

Have a look at this comparison of the 5700 and G3, them G3 images are much nicer.

Thanks for the feedback Allen, and the link Drisley. Your information is great! Do either of you have experience with the Olympus C5050Z? I have been hearing good things about that camera, on the bad side I hear the C5050's photos have a lot of noise. Physically the 5050 is great except for the LCD screen (I really don't care for the limited pivot).

Hello Dougery, I do not have any experience with the C5050, but I will say that if you have had any experience with a flip round LCD as on the G3, you will miss it if you use a camera without one.
I looked at Drisley's comparisons, and as I mentioned previously, I made comparisons too. I feel that the 5700 just blows the image up in size but not quality. What use is that?
Every camera has problems, fors and againsts, one has to decide which one will make one happy. I feel that if one reads too much, as I did, one might well end up with the wrong camera, or at least always wondering if one made the right decision. There is so much to learn.
Go for the G3 and don't keep thinking about the others. We will probably all have DSLR's before too long anyway, and the G3 is one of those cameras to keep and use at family gatherings etc. rather like those people with instamatics or whatever they are called, but with a lot more quality.
Good luck in your choice.
Allen.

Good description Allen. The 5700 images seem to lack detail. They almost look like a 3 MPixel pic blown up to 5 Mpixel.
Also, as you can see on the last shot on my previous link, the G3 has wider dynamic range than the 5700 (hence the blown out areas in the bright portion of the brick).
