Beth,
I am like you, looking for a workshop in NYC, but I have found something very useful and not expensive. I purchased a ebook (regular book available), that is exclusively for the G3. See link below:
Canon G3 - ebook
http://www.shortcourses.com/bookstore/canon/book_canong3.htm
Digital Desktop Studio Photography - ebook
http://www.shortcourses.com/bookstore/studio/book_studio.htm
These books are realy good, I can't put it down. It has really helped me to understand the G3. These books are in full color and very descriptive.
I hope these help you until you find a photography course/workshop that best fits your needs. You do need to have a good understanding about the G3 before you take any courses, the classes/workshops are usually geared towards people with an understanding of their camera and basic photography. They seems to focus on techniques rather than basics of the camera. This has been my experience with my search thus far.
I hope this helps you and good luck.

Beth,
Welcome to the forum and owning a Canon G3. Here is an online photo course with a lot of useful information and it costs nothing.
http://www.photocourse.com/
While it's not specific to the G3, I can tell you from owning other digital cameras, that the digital basics are the same on each camera. After you understand the basics the next advice I would give is just go out and use the camera as much as you can. Experience is your best teacher. Digital cameras are like computers, the more you play and experiment, the more you learn. You don't lose anything taking lots of practice photos with digital, delete what you don't like and keep the rest. Learn from your mistakes.
The G3 looks more complicated then it really is. For the novice it has many automatic features that makes taking great photos easy. As you learn more about the G3, you can then start to experiment with the manual modes of the camera.
Have fun with your G3!

trbrogan,
LOL..We gave the same link, my link is to the purchase of the ebooks that are for the G3 and you gave the link where they teach you about the camera. Nice to see we are on the same wave length and that the site we provided is a good one. I go there constantly, learned a lot. The ebook I purchased is really good too.

Congrats on your new G3, hope you enjoy it. Don't rush yourself, take your time and you will do great. One of my biggest problems when I first got my G3 is that I expected to take photos like the experts here on this site and when I was not able to it left me disappointed. Now, I understand that I will get there in time and just relax and enjoy growing with my G3.
Also, check out some of my other topics
Welcome All Newbies - This is for newbies to help them get up to speed.
Tell us a little about yourself - This topic is for general information about ourselves.
What is your G 1 - 2 - 3 accessories list - This is really cool, we lists all our accessories, this is useful for people to see what others are getting and could help others decided what they might want.
They have some useful information too at least I hope. Just remember, take it easy and have fun.
Best of luck,

Niloligist:
While I understand that the ebook itself is in color...is it able to be printed? I have a hard time reading off a screen and would like to print the book in color myself. I emailed the author but haven't heard from him so I'm curious if you or anyone else knows. I did not seem to find an answer in any search I did.
Thanks!!
Diane

The Shortcourse book on the G3 is great. It was the first purchase I made after buying my G3. Lot's of great information for someone like me with not much background in photography.

Thanks, I just ordered the ebook on CD. I prefer to print my own color version at work ;)
I know the book will guide me to take better pictures... right now I'm okay but I want to learn to become a better photographer. I've got the eye for composition, but lack the photographic experience with the features of the camera. I think it's a good investment.
