Have trip with family (wife and 2 teenage girls) (non photographers) to Kenya this summer on mid to upper end safari. I didn't upgrade my old 10d for a recent trip to Italy, and it worked out OK, although I will probably spring for a 7D for this trip. I have a 70-200 2.8 and a 1.4x and 2x extenders that don't seem to degrade the image much if at all. I thought the 1.6x sensor of the 7D and it's faster autofocus might make more sense than the 5D MkII for moving and distant animals. Advice welcome on that as well as best lens setup. I also use a 24-105 L and 12-24 F4 Tokina.
On my Italy trip with the family I had very little opportunity to shoot in the 'golden hour", and being with family makes it tough to set up the tripod without hearing "Dad, take the picture already!!" In Africa, he game reserves require that you be back at your lodging by 6:30 pm. They will take you out in the early morning 6:30 to 8:00- Any advice appreciated on how to get out in the right lighting to have more opportunity for "award winners".
