Well, this is a HEAVY crop but my only pic of these guys. Always like spotting these birds and watching them strike the pose!
But their call is even more interesting...

These are one beautiful bird and they are very hard to find in the open or close to shore without being buried in the grasses as you have here, they do have the behavior here where they appear to mimic the grasses but this works better in dead brown grass making them almost invisible. I have heard their call and you just don't expect that kind of sounds coming out of a bird like this..
Very nice image here and looks to have held up nicely even with a large crop.

The American Bittern is very similar to the immature Green Heron. When I first saw one, I thought it was simply a piece of sharp wood sticking up from the grass. Then at 800mm, I was able to capture the image.

I've yet to even se one.. it takes skill and luck to get a shot of these clandestine birds.
