Received a new Canon 28-135IS lens a couple of days ago and have used in only a couple of times. Today I notice a definite 'grunt' every time the IS kicks on and off. I also can hear the gyro(s) buzzing inside the lens. Is this normal, or is my new lens bad.
thx,
Brad

Hi Brad,

I don't own the 28-135 IS any more but I don't remember mine making any weird noises. Sometimes I could hear the motors running, but they were very quiet.

I'd be getting it replaced or repaired on warranty. If you've only just got it I'm sure it would be replaced.

Good Luck!

Cal

Can anyone with this lens check theirs for the type of noise I described? The 'grunt' is very noticeable, where the other noise can be heard from about 1 foot away.
thanks,
Brad

I don't have any personal experience with IS, but this did come up recently....

Yes, there is a "grunt" noice every time the gyro starts up.
How loud the noice is ?
That's very subjective.
I wouldn't say it's loud ;)

I hear the noise and actually feel a slight vibration but I think it's the IS system at work. Turn it off if it bothers you but that is the reason you paid extra for getting the lens. I'm used to it and just ignore it....Brian

Thanks for the replies - my biggest concern is that the lens only starting doing that four days after it arrived. I distinctly remember turning the IS on and off the first day I used it (indoors - quiet environmnet) and heard and felt no difference between modes. Now the lens sounds strange (as compared to when I first got it) and sometimes is hash and fast when it jumps into focus. I'm beginning to think that the IS wasn't even working at all the first few days I had the lens.
thx,
Brad

I have had my 28-135 since July 2002 and I did not notice the hum noise I get with the IS on until about December. I suspect that the lubricant has worn down a bit. My 75-300 only went about a month or two before I started to get a hum from it when the IS is on. I wait to see if the 100-400L eventually does the same thing, but since I will probably use it the least, I may never notice when it does.

Both still take great pictures and the IS works fine, the hum is not noticeable except when in a quiet environment.

I believe I'm going to send my lens back. Just took it out for some test shots and the 'grunt' noise is gone - but now the humming noise varies a lot. Sometimes it is loud and sometimes a bit less noisy. Since the lens is less than a week old and the noise and grunts are not consistent, I believe the IS is defective.
Thx,
Brad
