After many months of deliberation, I'm about 99% sure that the decision has been made. Teh Guru will be leaving the states on a world domination tour. The plan is to take my photography to another level - www.jaymarroquin.com
The ball is in motion and within the next month or so I'll be selling most of my goods and leaving my job of the past 5 years. I'll be taking some money I've stashed away to support me abroad for a year or so without the need for additional income.
I'll be taking my camera gear, small laptop, backpack and some comfy shoes. I'm going to start off in Morocco and Africa and go from there... Guess I need all my travel shots while I still have insurance and talking about insurance, I'll have to get some for all my gear and make sure it's covered abroad.
I'll be documenting my travels on my blog (which I built but have yet to use) - www.jaymarroquin.com/blog
Planned stops so far (some are simply arrival destinations, then off by foot, bus, donkey or camel):
Casablanca, MOROCCO
Cape Town, SOUTH AFRICA

Kuala Lumpur, MALAYSIA
Singapore, SINGAPORE

Definitely lots of thinking :) I've done something like this before for my racing career but I was a lot younger and there was less on the table to risk.

So a bit of a dilemma now.
It's regarding the payout of my vacation time. I've been here at my current job 5 years. Throughout the year you basically accrued vacation time or what we call PTO (paid time off). So you have accrued and banked. The accrued PTO goes into the bank every first of the year (January 1st).
You guys still with me... So when you quit your job or leave the organization, you can only cash out the PTO you have in your bank. So basically if I leave on Oct 8th, I get around $2400 which is the amount I have banked. If I stay till January 2nd or 3rd, I get the additional $3650.
Accrued xxx.xx hrs = $3650
Banked xx.xx hrs = $2400
I do know that I need days off the week of Oct 10th - 15th off to shoot Houston Fashion Week. I could theoretically take about 40 hours of vacation time for that then stay till the first of the year.
I'm also working on some sponsorship deals for part of this trip. Guess if that pans out soon I'll quit for sure. If not, I should probably really consider staying here till the beginning of the year. Would allow a bit more time for sponsorships and to save some cash in general.
Ah, decisions, decisions... So...what do you guys/gals think?

Id hold out til the first of the year

What will the 40 hours of time you take for the Houston trip reduce the accrued time by? Still seems reasonable to stay through the first of the year, celebrate the holidays here and then take off, but I dont know your agenda, and when you want to be at each location.

Alright, it's a done deal.
My last day of employment will now officially be Jan 3, 2011. No reason to leave money on the table and the extra time will allow for more planning, etc...

Actually, today's my last day at work and haven't had time to look into it. I did talk to my automotive insurance provider (Nationwide) who said this wouldn't be a problem. I'm going to follow up with them this week to see what's up.
Also a quick Google search for "Camera Gear Insurance" provided these links:

I have much respect for anyone doing this kind of thing. Mixing travel and photography is a beautiful thing. I have been to 14 of the cities you mention, some photographic gold on there. If in Japan I would have to recommend you make it to Kyoto, simply stunning. Buy a railpass rather than a regular ticket. Bon voyage.

By the way, If you're going to be in Vietnam and Thailand anyway, you should really stop off in Cambodia to see the Angkor area (and Lao too, if you can manage). It can be done surprisingly quickly and very cheaply...and really, don't be surprised if you end up spending more time in SE Asia than you expected to!
Also, big kudos on having the fortitude to leave your job, particularly in this economic environment. I myself have decided to try to get as much travel in as I can before I settle into a career (or "if" :D). I'm 27 now, and so far, 4 of my 5 post-college jobs have been in foreign countries. I've never done more than 2 straight months of pure travel, though... but I'd really, really like to. Of course, the negative side here is that when I do attempt to start a career, I'm going to be hitting the entry level at the same time as a wave of people 6 or 7 years younger than I am. I'll get back to you in 2025 or so as to whether or not it was all worth it!
Out of curiosity, what gear are you taking? I'd absolutely invest a few hundred bucks in a cheap 2nd body if you haven't already. Or even a micro 4/3 body as well. If there's one thing I regret about my time in Asia (aside from, *cough*, several botched romantic opportunities), it's that I had nothing but a Powershot S50 with me. Still got some great pictures, but none of them are going to be printed any larger than 8x10. So, you really don't want to wind up losing your only body (through whatever means) and being left with nothing!
Oh, and if you by some bizarre happenstance pass through Autun, France, I'd be happy to show you around. It'll take all of an hour!

I second Cambodia - it's amazing and the people are just great. I didn't fancy Laos too much tho!
Angkor Wat/Siem reap is only a few hours by bus from Bangkok, so it's easily do-able. It's a pretty amazing place but the big temples are a bit too touristy and I didn't enjoy them so much for photography. It is crazy though, so many temples!
I wouldn't suggest taking a second body. I traveled for 4 months with my 5d ii and it was my first time really backpacking. You really don't need ANY extra weight to carry with you, the lighter you can travel the better. Just always keep your camera by you and be sensible.

Yeah, the "big temples" were by far my least favorite part of the area. Some of the smaller ones are fantastic, though. There are a few smaller complexes in the area, for example, that are half-ruined - and, given that the whole place is close to lawless, you are free to explore every nook and cranny.
About the 2nd body... I don't know. You're absolutely right on the space/weight front, which is why I suggested the m4/3 body. I would just hate to be robbed halfway through a trip like that and end up with NO camera, you know?

Alright, time to post in this thread again. No the world travels abroad have not started but travels in the US have. The world travel project (which is photography based) is now being pitched to corporations for sponsorship so I decided to quit putting a date on my expected departure.
I'll be gone when the moment is right and financial backing is in place. Have secured two decent sponsorships and others look promising. I currently find myself in West Texas visiting family since I have to do that before leaving. Next week will have me leaving on a moto tour with my buddy Craig. Leaving from Austin, TX, headed West to the Pacific then up North towards Canada. Should take 3-4 weeks.
Read about it here - http://www.jaymarroquin.com/blog/2011/projects/riding-west-with-mooty/
can you c/n this sponsorship thing?
While abroad I'm doing the following:
- 2 fashion spreads as of now. One in Vietnam, one in Kenya
- Main reason I'm traveling however is to capture images for 2 books I'm doing, "Reflection" and "Dreams"
- Few designers and friends in the Fashion Industry are interested in sponsoring or collaborating for the Fashion stuff.
- Other peeps and corporations to be involved on the adventure photography thing

In Japan, I'd skip Fukuoka and maybe spend time in the north (Hokkaido). The offshore islands are a real treat if you can find time to visit, I have a few suggestions if you are open to it.
Great stuff, if you stop by Vancouver I think us Canuck boys will take you out on a tour ;)

Exactly. The most important thing I've learned on this 3 week journey so far. No reason why shots from the states shouldn't be included in my "World Travels".
5 National Parks so far and each one so beautifully different.

It's always a bit sad when I'm talking to French friends who are either on their way or have just returned from a trip to the States that usually includes places like the Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, LA, Vegas, Arches... and I realize that I've been in 18 foreign countries but, aside from one week in the San Francisco suburbs for training, I've never been off the East Coast of the USA. I've been all over said coast, but apart from Vermont and West Virginia, I've never been in a state that doesn't touch the Atlantic Ocean! I've really got to work on that.

friend of mine was filming in Morocco and thought he had made friends with some Bedouin only to wake up one morning and they had left camp and taken all his gear with them......could happen anywhere, not least London but just a warning not to drop your guard.
The first alarm bell should have been that there are NO Bedouins in Morocco. Perhaps you meant Berber.
