Hi, I am quite a novice in this.

The image from my G1 looks 'washed out' or very 'poor lighting' exposure, even under auto or P mode.

Is there anything wrong with this.
How can I check

Thanks

Under what conditions? Bright sunlight, interiors without flash, with flash, overcast outdoors, etc?? Can you post a picture?

Well you have to have a picture hosted on a website someplace. Preferably not geocities. Then just use html code like this [ img ] http://picture location [ /img ] except without the spaces between the brackets and the "img". If you can't host the picture somewhere then maybe just email it to me:

How have members posted pictures to THIS forum, then? There are a number of examples of this on this forum.

This thread has postings with pictures inset. What technique did they use to do this?

Those people have their own sites that allow remote linking of the images. I have a small site with images too:

I wasn't happy with the way my G-1 pictures looked also, until I adjusted the menu settings. IMO the following offer the best results straight out of the camera.

I always shoot in RAW at ISO 50, and move the sliders for contrast, sharpness and saturation all the way to the right to their maximum values.

If you're not sure how to do this, check pages 54-56 and 101-102 of the manual.

Good Luck,

Two questions ... Can you adjust your camera to shoot in RAW format and make it "stick"? I mean, will it revert back to a different default setting once you take a picture or turn the camera off, or will it stay in that mode until you adjust it back again? I usually take LOTS of pictures at a time, so it would be a pain to have to keep formatting the camera each and every time I take a picture or turn the camera back on.

Second question ~~ Do you need to buy separate software if you want to upload your pictures in RAW? I still am using Zoombrowser (that's all I have).

I don't have my camera or manual with me - I'm out of town, so I can't look this stuff up. Thanks for your help!

I have the same problem. You may see some 'washed out' photos in my web site:

Mimi,
If you shoot RAW the in-camera settings of White balance, sharpness, contrast and saturation can be adjusted to taste when you convert RAW to TIFF (or JPEG). You will need to load the Canon software that came with your camera. In this way you can increase your saturation after you shoot while the data is still in the 10 bit mode, before it becomes an 8 bit TIFF file. If your color is washed out make sure you are not overexposing your image. Try underexposing by -2/3 EV and see how you like the result. This is a very common adjustment for the G-1. Incidently there is a much newer and better version of Zoombrowser available on the Canon website. Use the search feature to find it.

Posting pics:
You need to find a site to photo share that will allow posting a URL for an indivudual image. I use www.fototime which costs $25/year. Its definately the way to share pics, much better than attaching JPEGs to emails. Then before you go to compose a reply click on Help above. you will find a line on embedding images, it is a generic sample of what your URL should look like.
