This is a shot of the top of my Bogen 3221 tripod. It works great and I am very pleased with it. I purchased it off eBay for 80.00. What I am curious about is the open screw hole on the top near the center column. Am I missing something?

Am I missing something?

My immediate guess would be "a screw"...

My guess is a holder for one of the screws that attaches the quick release plate to the camera.

Sorry don't know much about yours - but mine came with two screws (of different threads) and you just screw the one you are not using into the tripod base (mine has two holes with threads)

It could be the screw that puts pressure on the tripod mount, so that the head and the column are attached securely...

I'm certain that threaded hole is for attaching the old style long strap to the tripod. There is a similar hole on each leg of my Bogen 3051 for that purpose. There may be or have been other accessories (like a net to hold stuff) that could be connected via that hole too.

I think it's for the screw-in water bubble leveling device (or whatever u guys call it). If u don't find that device anywhere else on the tripod, this hole is probably for the device.

Your explaination seems to fit the evidence, since there is a leveling device and the hole goes nowhere (would put pressure on anything). Thanks to all who tried to help.

It is for a carrying strap.

OK, now exactly what is the strap called and where can I buy one? :-)

This is the current version of the strap. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=5285&is=REG&addedTroughType=search

The connection to the tripod's threaded hole in the spider is different than the photo above, though. The current model has an adapter that screws into the spider and a clip on the strap that clips to the adapter. The strap shown in the photo above is an older model and is no longer available new.
