Good PS work! I love that you included a bit of shadow underneath the protruding wing, a job well done...

Thanks for the comments. I had this printed up to a 16X20 with the white border being the matte and it looks pretty good.

Really nice. Could you teach us how you did that? I really like the shadow effect under the wing.

Okay...You asked for it!...here is a tutorial on how to create the butterfly image. I have made some assumptions that you have worked with layer and have cut things out in Photoshop. If not, there are some good tutorials in PS or please feel free to email or post questions. I am not very good at writing tutorials, but hopefully this makes sense. I am heading out for a few hours, but I'll check back later if you have any questions. Email = tdwatson66@yahoo.com
The idea is to create an image that looks like it is matted in white, but has a portion of the image overlaying the matte.
1. Create a blank white image that is 8X10 (or whatever size you wish) at 250dpi. I prefer 250 dpi, but I suppose you can use whatever dpi setting you want. To do this go File>New and then type in the size/dpi. This should open up your new image.
2. Select the image you want to work with in my case I chose this..

3. Crop the image to whatever you want UNDER what will appear as the matte. Once you have done that, click and drag the cropped image over to the white background. This will create a new layer. If you go to Windows>Layers this will open the layer box and you can see that you now have the background and Layer one which is the picture you just dragged over. To select a layer, just click on it in the layer window. Your new image should look like this.

4. With Layer 1 selected, we now want to add the black border and the drop shadow. Click on Layer>Layer Style>Drop Shadow This will add the drop shadow as well as open the Layer Style box. You should already have a drop shadow, so at the bottom of this box, click on the word stroke. This will probably put a red box around your layer, but if you click on the color box, you can select black. Also there is a slider bar at the top called "Size". Drag the bar to the right till you get to roughly 5px. If you do not see the color box or slider bar, it is probably because you clicked the stroke "box" and not clicked on the work stroke. Once this is done, click OK and the image should look like this..

5. Now go back to the original image that you cropped and click Edit>Undo Crop. The crop yuo did should now revert and you should have the full size image. Now cut out the tip of the wing and drag it over to the new image as well. Now go to Layer>Layer Style>Drop Shadow to add a drop shadow to it. Now you should have something like this..

6. The final step is to drag the wing tip into place and then Layer>Flatten Image. This will merge all the layers into one layer. Now you can do a "Save As" and save the image. The final image should look something like this...

Here are a couple more images that I quickly did...

How is that done?
